Ok, Doctoraldude, let's remain cheerful and optimistic about it.
And in order to keep this thread alive while we wait for an uncertain decision, I will ask you and others: does anyone ever went to Ithaca? I read that someone questioned the location and I'd like to develop the subject.
Considering for a moment the small possibility of getting admitted, I would like to know a little more about the city and the university as well. You see...I'm not American, I've always lived in huge urban centers (the smallest was London, not the Canadian, but the British one ) and I'm not sure about living in a tiny newyorker town.
And what about the university and the department? I know it is pretty good in my subfield (economic sociology) but I don't want to be a specialist jerk. I value a lot the good ol' social theory and consider it to be essential to any substantial research. I'm also a little afraid of any kind of sociological etnocentrism (let's admit that American sociologists and universities in general tend to ignore what was or is being produced overseas). The presence of Swedberg was essential to my decision of applying there (both for his European roots and his treatment of classical social theory) but what about others?
