  1. I'm in a similar situation as Lycoris, only I've been in the relationship for much longer. It would be horrible for him to reject a good phd program in exchange for a nonexistent job. And I'll probably regret giving up on my first choice of schools - I was so excited I'd already bought a sweatshirt and worn it for months, and been in contact with a potential advisor. But both of us together at my second choice school is hardly a hellish prospect, right? I suppose we'll see after the school visits whether or not I can muster enthusiasm for the other school.
  2. So who else is trying to navigate the grad school application nightmare with two people in mind? How are you negotiating things with your SO? And how do you deal when one person gets accepted to the favored school while the other does not?
  3. Coming FROM one of the leading schools... don't fear the leading brand names. Many of them have their own huge failings, which you will never see until your first semester of research. Like mine... you'd think with such a large endowment basic lab equipment like AFMs and FT-IRs would be in better supply... or at least younger than I am.... You're in for a reason, you obviously have the ambition to work through daunting challenges or you won't have bothered to apply. Have fun and buy lots of school-logo merchandise.
  4. I got in to UC-Berkeley, Stanford, UoI, and Caltech. Well, kind of Caltech, they have that "interview" thing.
