  1. I'll throw in a nomination for Durham/Chapel Hill. I live in Durham now and while most others here hate it, I actually like it. It's a bit crime-y, but if you take normal precautions, you should be fine. Plus the cost of living is RIDICULOUSLY low and there's a stretch of space with lots of bars/restaurants (some more grad student-y than others) all within walking distance of each other, which is also in walking (or short driving) distance of campus and a few apartment complexes. Everything's really compact, which is something I took for granted in undergrad and didn't realize was uncommon until I visited some other places (*cough*Storrs, Connecticut*cough*) on grad school visits. Also, I love love love the Streets at Southpoint (huge mall, movie theater, and outside area with shops, fountains, restaurants, etc.), about 30 minutes away from Duke (20 if you drive like I do). If you're going to UNC, Chapel Hill is great too -- awesome college town. I haven't lived there but I've gone there on weekend nights as many Duke students do, and it's fun -- lots of restaurants, bars, clubs, etc. I think it'd be particularly great for grad school because it has everything you need (nearby mall, easily driveable, close grocery stores/Target/etc., multiple bars in the same area (great for bar hopping), a range of bar options (sports bars, crazy "undergrad" bars, sit-down older-crowd type places, places that do trivia), LOTS of different kinds of foods) -- but it's also ridiculously low-priced. In other words, you will have EVERYTHING you need (unless you're expecting NYC), and you won't have to pay that much for it. If it made sense for me to apply to Duke for grad school (and if I thought I could have gotten in), I would have stayed here another 5-6 years in a heartbeat. Love it.
  2. Hey! I'll be there for Social Psychology Home is NY, school is NC.
  3. Hey everyone! I'm moving to the area this fall, and I was just wondering if anyone has info on apartment hunting. I am hoping to live with my boyfriend (if he can find a job in the area) or if not, with a roommate (I don't like living alone). Even if I live with my boyfriend, though, we are very young and not planning on doing the whole marriage/wanting a "quiet family neighborhood" thing ANY time soon. I'd like to live close to other grad students -- I'm pretty social and don't want to feel cut off from everyone. I wouldn't mind it being a "louder" area, though I'd like for it not to be filled with undergrads either. Anyone have any knowledge of what areas are good and/or where I should be looking? Also...near a bus line would be lovely... Thanks
  4. Glad to finally be done as well :-) It feels amazing to have made a decision!!! Best of luck to all those who are still waiting.
  5. Yes, I had it. I think it went well, very short -- just talked for 15 minutes about research interests, asked a couple of questions, etc. Good luck!
  6. Hey Lorax, This has been up on the Chicago website for months: Decisions will be mailed during the first week of March via first class postal service. We do not give decisions by phone or email. That leads me to believe there were no interviews...but I could always be wrong
  7. Whoops, my apologies for the misinformation then! I was told there were no interviews, so I guess maybe I just spoke to someone who didn't know otherwise. At any rate, congrats weeble!! EDIT: I actually just got an e-mail too
  8. Hey kh1264, I called yesterday, and they said that they will be mailing out all decisions in the middle of this month. You're correct, they don't interview, so they'll be sending out all acceptances and rejections in...probably about 2 weeks, and the fact that you haven't heard anything yet doesn't mean anything positive or negative. Good luck!
  9. Sorry, Itchy...if misery loves company and it makes you feel any better, same here Also, judging by the Results Search, there were an awful lot of rejections being doled out...
  10. No problem...I'll be away on a cruise and I'm LEAVING on Friday for a week and a half (argh!!!) At least I'm pretty sure I already know where I'm going, so I guess that takes some of the anxiety away
  11. For anyone waiting to hear back from Harvard or GW, I called today. Harvard said they are mailing out all decisions on Friday, and GW said they are sending them out "mid-month." Good luck, everyone!
  12. Hey everyone-- I have a quick question about the importance (or unimportance) of school rankings for social psych PhD programs. When getting your Ph.D. how important is it REALLY to go to a "top-ranked" school? I ask because I've gotten into 2 schools (as you can tell by my signature) -- one is top 10, the other (which I am MAJORLY leaning towards) is top 100. However, the latter has research that is more in line with my interests, amazing funding opportunities, a group of faculty/grad students I hit it off with right away, and overall what I feel is a program that is just a better fit for me and my interests (not to mention closer to home). So -- my question is, would it be really dumb to pass up the higher-ranked school in favor of the better fit? How much do rankings really matter? Thanks!!
  13. Not sure where else to put this (or if someone has already asked...I didn't see it anywhere). I just returned from a campus admit visit that involved staying with 2 grad students, being picked up + dropped off at the airport by two DIFFERENT grad students, meeting and speaking with every grad student in the department, 2 of whom organized the whole weekend, speaking with my POI, speaking for 30 minutes with every other faculty member in the department (8 total), and a party for recruits, faculty, and grad students at one professor's house. Who gets a thank you note? Everyone? Just some? I'm assuming the hosts + my POI, but who else (if anyone)? Thanks!
  14. Hey -- for anyone who applied to Harvard, I called the admissions office and they were not much help (she just told me they're not allowed to say anything over the phone)...but she did say that 1) Not all decisions have been made and 2) Everything is delivered BY POSTAL MAIL, nothing by phone, e-mail, or website (much like I believe someone else already posted on here earlier).
  15. Yeah. Considering the lovely Rick Roll I got when I flipped out about them and copy/pasted the link...yeah.
