  1. Ah yes, I am living in Washington Heights and paying $850 which will go up to $950 in the fall. Unfortunately, I am a student at Morningside, not the medical campus. Its a bit far, although not prohibitively so, to get to Morningside every day.

Anybody know if $1200 a month for a room in a nice area of Morningside is too much? I'm probably going to go with International House over there but it is $1180 for a room in a 3-5 bedroom apt.

some 1 bedroom apartments are around $1,500 a month at Morningside. 1,200 seemed a little bit high for a room. maybe you should look for studio apartments. their price is around 1,200-1,300.

  2. It's an apartment - 3BR. I guess I was hoping for a little less considering the location (Wash Heights, not Morningside), but I still haven't seen my room - if it's gloriously large, I'll be jumping for joy!

I see, it's little bit far. but I assure you the price is very good. you pay around 1500 for the 1 bedroom apartments at the morningside

  3. Finally got my housing! $950/month, almost :s I really hope the room is at least nice...

I didn't really like the area where the med school is (seems like there's a lot less stuff than at Morningside - I went to CC for my undergrad so I guess I got a little spoiled :P)... but I'd rather live close to campus, at least my first year.

congrats. $950/month is awesome price. is that an apartment or a dormitory room?

  4. Finally.. its official.. I just said no to SAIS, and yes to SIPA...

And yes osierus.. I'm with you... lets make a study group like the tv show Community.. but we will have to at least take 1 class together each semester.. hahaha..

erry congratulations on your decision. so, where do we meet in nyc :)

  5. I'm gonna notify the institution that gives me the fellowship tonight (GMT+7).. I'll let you know guys after its official! I can't bear this any longer! Whichever school I pick is the best school for me!!!

erry, we need to gather a commission for you to decide.

  6. Hahaha what about you msal?

SAIS is somehow creepin in...but im doing my best to justify SIPA!!! Wish me luck hanaha

most probably I will be going to SIPA. let's say 90 percent. what are you asking to the current students? I will be glad if you share some feedback about SAIS vs SIPA discussion

  7. GOT IN!!! I just can’t believe it! VIVAAAAAA!! After waiting for so long, I thought I would be rejected. OVER THE MOON RIGHT NOW! Good luck to those who are still waiting! And congrats, Cossack!!

madrilena, huge congrats. now erry will be closer to SIPA I think :)

  8. I see that we have some IR experts here and I would like to ask them a question. How do you compare the quality of education in SAIS and SIPA, in terms of giving a strong insight on foreign policy making of the US and also the international policy making processes. I am less interested in the reputation (and as far as I know these two schools have almost equal reputation) but I am more interested in the quality and experience of professors, and the content of the courses. I know most of these can be found from the websites but I would like to hear your opinions.

  9. Hai msal! I thought you already made up your mind! I'm still weighing! tough tough tough!

yes I mostly made up my mind. are you still weighing your options? maybe you can consult with your supervisors, they might have an idea on your future career and give you some insight.

  12. I am having the exact same considerations... SAIS is very attentive, yes. But SIPA is also attentive if you know how, like being active at the message board (where current students and admission officers are actually answering every question posted), email the admission office (they'll let you talk with current student if u want to)... I heard or read somewhere, everything is available at SIPA if you know where to look and want to do something for it..

And i also am the same with you that SIPA is more global focus (in the sense that it is not focusing too mucn on American policy). I also like the idea to take courses at columbia school of law and school of business...

But all in all, Even though im leaning toward SIPA, i still havent reached my final decision. Its either SAiS or SiPA

erry, I thought you are already in, what makes you think again.

I agree that Columbia might have a more international (and maybe more market oriented?) focus. but I also think a strong insight on the American politics, which SAIS can give you, might be a very good asset.

I would like to hear opinions on, which school gives you better insight on international policy making processes.

  13. especially for me! I was only 30% leaning toward SIPA, but this thread brought me to 80% now.. SIPA!

erry3779, just 80%? Come on...99%! lol....That's what SIPA told me yesterday: "Decisions began being announced on Wednesday, March 14th, but are nowhere near completed" and again "thanks for your patience". I guess I will hear next Friday at 6pm or something like that haha. Imagine if it's a rejection after waiting for so long...lol

So....who is going to go to SIPA for sure?

yeah, patience is the most common virtue of SIPA applicants.it seems that you already passed the test.

regarding the decision, I think erry and I mostly made up our minds

  14. Congrats, msal! May I ask you what time did you hear from them? As far as I know from foreign students that attended SIPA, the pre-term English course is this http://ce.columbia.e...-Public-Affairs. It is required for those with a TOEFL score below 109. You can get rid of this requirement if you repeat the exam and pass this mark. Also, I have been told that if you prove that you are not able to attend, i.e work reasons, you can be exempt as well. Good luck and let us know if you accept the offer!!

@msal, what concentration did you apply to?

thank you madrilena, I heard like yesterday 16:00 EST. my concentration is international finance and economic policy. regarding the pre-term issue, as far as I know, graduating from a university where medium of instruction is English is enough to be exempted from TOEFL. this is my case but I still sent my score (what was I thinking?). I will try to remind this to them.

so you're gonna go to SIPA? And why is it?? come on help me make up my mind!!!!

And congratulations!!!!!!!!!! Are you sure you're not going to SAIS? (hahaha I'm spreading my problem all over this place)

and thanks erry. I wanna go to SIPA due to my special case :) I should go to NYC since my wife is also going to SIPA. I don't think this would help make up your mind :)

  15. I will go back of course... Without them I will never can afford both schools! the international institutions thing is for a distant-future!!

Why is your case much more complicated? Perhaps I could help you justifying SIPA.. (hehehe)

the complication has been resolved. I am admitted to SIPA and most probably I am accepting the offer. by the way, does anyone know about the pre-term English courses? is there a way to get rid of that condition? erry, did you make up your mind? where are you going?

  16. hahaha.. what if they admitted you? (which I am sure they will).. will u drop SAIS and go to SIPA? If you do the same, I'll do it with you! hahahahahahah OMG I really am tired of weighing these two schools! Now I don't care anymore! Columbia is Columbia! NYC is NYC!

well, if you are not going back to your foreign ministry and prefer an international institution (I remember such a thing, am I right) I think columbia might be good choice, or let's say both schools are great. but if you will go back, I think SAIS is a little bit ahead of SIPA. I believe that SAIS can give you a very good insight on current American foreign policy, which is a very good asset.

my case is much more complicated. for the time being I just want them to announce.
