Chin up baby - you didn't want to go there anyway!
-
Thanks for pointing that out. I wonder if FP has an intern doing their transcribing - or maybe someone from UC Denver
-
I'm looking at the online article here: http://www.foreignpolicy.com/story/cms. ... 685&page=1 and it's still showing "University of Colorado - Denver" tied for #12 with Yale, MIT and UCSD. It is indeed unfortunate that they have not corrected this as it casts severe doubt on the veracity of the whole study when they confuse two very different schools. If someone were to turn in a thesis with this kind of error on it they wouldn't get their degree.
-
The ratings have a grievous error. The University of Colorado at Denver doesn't have a graduate IR program in any way, shape or form. Foreign Policy Magazine and William and Mary should be ashamed of this - about which DU is aware and let me tell you - the director of admissions is pissed . And why is Yale even on that list for Masters? I can only think they got there on the strength of their name.

I believe they notify by phone.

Middlebury Summer Language School?
HisRoyalHighness replied to ashes75's topic in Government Affairs Forum
French. But I have to say I'm not jazzed about living on-campus at Mills in Oakland for 1.5 months. I live in San Francisco anyway so the thought of having to share a dorm room in the hot Oakland summer doesn't sound appealing - at all. The Institute de Francais near Cannes is a good alternative - I've heard great things about that program. -
They only notify semi-finalists. If you don't hear - you didn't make it.

Middlebury Summer Language School?
HisRoyalHighness replied to ashes75's topic in Government Affairs Forum
I'm considering the Middlebury program at Mills. -
I was so excited and to top it off after re-reading the acceptance letter three hours after getting it I discovered I'd received a $10,000 a year scholarship! I felt like Sally Field when she gave that Oscar speech: "You like me, you really like me!!" Now I wish the other school would hurry up. I'm becoming resentful waiting and am already imaging myself at the school which accepted me. I've already decided if I'm wait-listed that I'm going to reject it.
-
That's quite cool. I wonder why this school never popped up on my radar?
-
happyhulalola - CONGRATS!!! I hope you'll be accepted to Korbel too and then you've got a choice of two (or more) excellent programs. Who knows? We may even up meeting in September!
-
What do you do to relax while waiting?
HisRoyalHighness replied to Yellow#5's topic in Waiting it Out
I workout - a lot. Then I make food and eat it - a lot. So I'm not getting more buff but at least I'm not gaining weight. :x -
ashes75: Thanks - Korbel gave me a scholarship so unless Fletcher matches it I'll most likely be at DU - which is excellent. I didn't apply to any schools that I wouldn't be happy attending
-
I was accepted at Korbel and am waiting to hear from Fletcher. Some people have heard back already.

My views on social issues are radically libertarian. My views on fiscal issues are more left and on foreign policy, believe it or not, I tend to be more moderate-conservative than my peers in the field.

Do You Feel You Deserve a Reason for Rejection?
HisRoyalHighness replied to DefinitelyMaybe's topic in Waiting it Out
I agree - it seems respectful and kind. Fletcher puts it that way and actually encourages people to reapply after meeting the concerns of the Admissions Committee. I wish more schools would adopt that policy. -
Rescinsion of Acceptance - Does it Happen?
HisRoyalHighness replied to HisRoyalHighness's topic in Waiting it Out
Thanks MDLee - like I said I'm not rationally nervous but reading these sites creates a "hall of mirrors" effect where you begin considering possibilities you never before thought about - like random people calling your grad school's office and trying to get your offer rescinded. Sounds crazy - right? That's because it probably is!! BTW - Your program sounds way cool -
Do You Feel You Deserve a Reason for Rejection?
HisRoyalHighness replied to DefinitelyMaybe's topic in Waiting it Out
The Fletcher School at Tufts offers those it rejects a reason for the rejection. -
As I recently discovered I'm probably suffering from Imposter Syndrome (these sites are so helpful). I'm sure the schools to which I've already been accepted are going to withdraw their acceptance offers. Of course rationally I know this isn't going to happen (but like I said, rational thinking seems to have gone out the window lately) but I was reading on another site about a woman who worked in a "hyper-competitive" environment who was scared one of her co-workers would find out where she was accepted, call the admissions office and try and get her offer withdrawn. Does this actually happen? It would seem to me the only way it could happen is if the school discovered after the fact that the applicant lied or otherwise committed fraud on their application. What do you think, has anyone heard of this happening and is it possible some random person could call your school's admission's office and try and get your acceptance rescinded?

Admitted - Anyone else feel anxious?
HisRoyalHighness replied to ctvu's topic in Decisions, Decisions
I've never heard of this "imposter sydrome" but I'm so glad I did because now I can put a name to what I've been feeling. I can't believe I got in and I'm sure I'm going to get a letter telling me my acceptance has been rescinded. It's driving me (and my BF) crazy. -
I understand and I think we're in agreement. Part of my reason for asking was because I really wanted to see what they said. I knew they wouldn't write anything negative but I wanted to see how positive - I guess it's the voyeur in me  I didn't put it to them like "Give me a copy or else" but I did ask that after they sent in the recommendation they please mail me a copy. All three (two professors and a former supervisor) agreed. And I have to say I'm glad I did - the letters were incredible and really added to my own sense of self-confidence. Were they not so goodI wouldn't have confronted the writer - I would simply have not asked them to write another. I guess it's up to the individual but as the person who started this thread shows - some recommenders can be real dicks and their dishonesty can cost you dearly.
-
It's interesting. Recommendation letters are one of the last bastions of academic secrecy. Corporations aren't allowed to keep references secret so why should professors be allowed to to do so? I provided an example (and there are thousands, if not tens of thousands) of a professor who told a student they would write a RECOMMENDATION letter and then slammed the student behind their back, possibly costing them admittance to their chosen program. And you feel that asking a professor for full transparency to ensure the same thing doesn't happen to you is a "dick move?" I stand by what I write and I don't see why professors shouldn't do the same. It's pretty simple for them to turn down requests for recommendations instead of agreeing to write one and then trash-talking an applicant, which strikes me as not only extremely cowardly (why not tell them to their face?) but also far more of a "dick move" than asking for a copy (which some schools will allow you to see anyway).
-
I told all my recommenders to send me a copy of the recommendation after they sent it in. I told them if they didn't feel comfortable doing so then I'd find another recommender. I did this because I've heard stories about recommenders who trash students in their letters - I even know someone on an admissions committee who this year read a "recommendation" letter from a prof who called the student "lazy" and said their craftsmanship was "poor." So my advice is to make very clear to your recommender that you're looking for a strong recommendation letter and if they don't feel they can provide it then no hard feelings - you'll get another. Better safe than sorry.

take a gamble: predict your own outcome!

1 Acceptance - Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver 1 Waiting - Fletcher School of Diplomacy at Tufts University I only applied to these two schools and I'll be happy to go to DU if I don't get into Fletcher - if I do get into Fletcher I'll have a hell of a time deciding!
