  1. I really don't think they have any funding at all for master's or MDiv degrees, maybe like one or two get some sort of package now. Sort of wondering if this is a sign of a future move to incorporate the program into Columbia's.
  2. Yep, I'm MA. I think it's a whole disorganized mess to be honest, and my letter was dated March 15 which means they were holding onto it for a while before releasing. I just don't get how they plan on attracting students this year because all the other schools have notified their applicants, and if students are waiting specifically for Union, they offer limited scholarships upon acceptance. It's sort of unfortunate, I went into this with Union as my top choice, but I've learned throughout the application process that it's not what it used to be for the MA program.
  3. Decisions in the mailbox today! I got in! Woo. But no moolah.
  4. I personally would not want to live in Milwaukee and I don't think the program is as strong as BC or HDS. It is a huge stipend, but I would take a little debt to go elsewhere.
  5. I spoke to a professor from my alma matter the other night who is a recent PhD grad and his basic advice is to go somewhere that will support/advocate for you when you apply for the PhD. Totally understandable that you don't want to do BC again, but distinguishing yourself as a Catholic scholar of sorts is actually a tremendous advantage. Remember where the jobs are at: Catholic universities. I would ditch Chicago, you're right, it's not worth the debt at all. There is way too much wishful thinking on this board about repaying debt when you have a masters in theology, this is not a degree that has a return on investment. To me, your decision is down to BC and HDS. BC cares more about the masters students than HDS does, but HDS is a bit stronger in feminist theology...yet not necessarily in systematic theology though. Then, the 9 extra k is nice to have, but I'm sure BC would provide the same should you work on campus. If I were you...I'd take HDS, then return to a Catholic institution for the PhD. Do know that you are leaving a more supportive community. Best of luck! PS- I'm like 99% sure I'm going with BC myself.
  6. If you don't have any undergraduate loans, 40k is not that bad. Your announcement seems a little defeatist...are you sure you really want to go to Yale and/or go to grad school right now at this moment?
  7. In the past day, the momentum has gone back to BC. I just want it to be September already.

OK- what in the word is going on? About a month ago, I was told in one week that decisions were being sent out. I know there has been some turnover there, so they might still be trying to catch up/clean up an administrative mess. Nonetheless, some of us have applied to other schools who want a decision by March 30.
  9. I had a professor who went there for her PhD, and based on her area of focus, it looks like they're making a push to be recognized within ethics. I couldn't tell you much more than that...sorry.
  10. Thanks for your response! I can tell by your signature you've had a successful application season, congrats! The BC Admitted Students Day will be important- I really need to walk away knowing that the program is top-notch, cares about the issues I've listed, the faculty make themselves accessible, etc. I'm assuming you've spent a good amount of time learning about Yale. What's your sense of the student body/community so far?
  11. Hi all, Like many others on this board, I'm looking for perspective on how to go about selecting my MA program. Overall, my career objective is to teach at the university level...how typical . Academic interests are in resolving tensions between lower and higher theologies and improving dialogue between western and eastern churches. Ideally, I'd love a school that supports a balance between social justice and philosophical theology. Currently, I'm down to BC and Yale. Cost of attendence is sort of a big deal to me, but some older and wiser folks have advised that over the course of a lifetime, a difference of 20k in loans is not really a major detriment to being able to support yourself. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks! BC Positives Boston location BTI Cost of attendance (would only need to take out minimal loans for cost of living) Proven history of improving relations between west/east churches BC Negatives Already went to a Jesuit undergrad, concerned about being pegged as too Catholic Overall, moderately conservative program...but there are times when certain figures step in and start slapping wrists...I do not want to be in a stiffled academic environment. Am I overestimating this? Lack of diversity amongst faculty and students Yale Positives More diverse course offerings Diversity (an old wooden ship) Networking/Opening doors...we all can't assume that we're getting PhDs aftewards, so what then? Suppose I want to use my degree towards something else? Yale Negatives Cost (would need 40k in loans over 2 years for tuition and living expenses)
