  1. My advisor said that I should thank the person who notified me and that's it. He said that if I haven't heard anything more by the beginning of April, then it would be okay to contact someone in the department to ask about the likelihood of receiving an offer.

Thanks for your response. That seems like a reasonable approach and I'll give it a shot.

  2. Is this what your advisors have told you? Because I've heard differently.

I've been back and forth about how I should reply back to a department that wait listed me. Is there anything else you can share about what your advisor said (and any rationale)?

Hopefully this will help me make up my mind about what to do.

  3. I have declined an offer from Indiana Bloomington. I hope this helps somebody out!

Thanks for updating us, I didn't know they were sending out offers already! Can you give any more details, e.g., was it a personalized email, phone call, etc.?

  4. I told myself that my early-in-the-alphabet last name was the reason I was the first person to report a rejection from Bloomington, and it was not because my application was so bad that they just had to reject me ASAP.

Would you mind saying the first letter of your last name? Mine is fairly early too and I'm trying to see if it might be a good sign for me.

  5. I tried a chocolate scented beard comb for Marc Lange at UNC. All I have to show for it is a rejection letter.

Logic tells me that either i) bearded men don't enjoy scented gifts, or ii) both our gifts were lost in the mail; and since i) is patently false, I can only reasonably infer USPS is to blame. Next time I'll pay the extra 70 cents for tracking.

  6. Anyone out there have any idea round about when Purdue usually gets around to sending out initial notifications?

Ianfaircloud predicted Feb 21st. Looking at the previously reported data on TGC, I think that's right on the money.

  7. After finishing my M.A. in philosophy (4.0 GPA at a Leiter top terminal M.A. program), I'm becoming increasingly interested in the Ph.D. program at the University of Hawaii. However, I can't find any solid information about whether or not they fund their Ph.D. students.

Does anyone have any solid information (or experience) about the funding for philosophy Ph.D. students?

    Thanks!

  8. Hey everyone,

I've been accepted to two master's programs, one at San Francisco State and one at Cal State, Los Angeles. Ideally, I would love to get my master's at one of these institutions and then move to a Ph.D. program in California.

I have fairly broad non specific philosophical interests ranging from political philosophy, to applied ethics, to metaphysics.

Basically, my question is: Which one of these schools is generally better received when applying to Ph.D. programs on the west coast?

Thank you all for your help!!
