  1. Hi y'all

I resisted from ever joining and commenting on this site, but it's warranted now. I received an e-mail this morning from Fulbright stating that I had been promoted from alternate to selected for full grant to Germany!

I had completely thrown the idea of Fulbright out my head when I was designated an alternate a month ago but today shows that there's hope for alternates.

Good luck to all those who haven't found out yet and to those who are alternates!

    Yay! There is hope!

  2. I know how you feel! There is still hope!

Found out just now that I am an alternate for full research grant to the South Pacific Island Nations.

I have no idea how to feel.

Edit: ill get all info updated in the spreadsheet later when I can get to my computer

  3. Hi everyone, I've applied for a full research grant to Kenya in support of my PhD. I am hopeful for my chances but of course one never knows! For those of you who have also applied to SSA (sub-Saharan Africa), I wrote to Jermaine Jones and received the following response two days ago (Monday April 8):

    "Hello ______,

I've heard that final selections for Sub-Saharan Africa may be ready by the middle of next week. I don't have any more specific information for you than this, but can say that I should be able to notify you and the other finalists within 24 hours of my receiving them.

(And fortunately, the situation in Kenya pre- and post-election has remained stable enough for the Fulbright program to continue running there uninterrupted.)

    I hope this helps."

So if you are waiting for SSA, please don't start worrying/freaking out/checking inboxes until at least next Wednesday! Has anyone else here applied to Kenya?

AHhhh Thanks for the info! I applied to Tanzania so maybe I will hear next week too!

  4. Two questions:

    (1) Did anybody else here apply for Tanzania?  If so, do you have an estimate of when we should hear back?

    (2) On the Fulbright Statistics site: http://us.fulbrightonline.org/studyresearch-grant-application-statistics, does anybody know if the "Applications" number is the total number of applications, or just the ones forwarded to the last stage?

If the latter is the case, does that mean that only half of the total has been forwarded to the Final-round committee?

    Thanks.

    I applied to Tanzania!

  5. I totally agree with everyone that said not to stress about the GRE. I didn't have the best scores in the world, but I still got into programs. I actually performed better the 2nd time I took the test because I had a "whatever let's just get this over with" attitude vs. the first time when I was overly stressed about scoring high. .

  6. It has been 6 years for me since undergrad. I don't regret taking that time off, because right out of undergrad I wanted to go to law school. Now I realize that would have been a complete waste of money. In those 5 years I landed a great job in a field that I know I want to work in for the rest of my life. Maybe some people can figure out what they want to do in life at 22 years old, but I know I didn't have a clue, I was more confused after college than I was after high school. I definitely recommend people take some time and start working in the field you think you're interested in before deciding on going to grad school. It also helps you with your applications!

  7. I'm not sure I'd qualify for in-state tuition at either school, at least until being there for a year (I currently live in Ohio).

Also, the free classes are in addition to the monthly income.

I've heard a bit about each program and the basic theme I keep getting is "both programs are strong", which is nice to hear but not very specific. I was unable to make it to the GSPIA open house, so I was unable to talk with current students and faculty from there.

And I have to let Mason know by Friday. How fun.

I'm looking at Pitt's GSPIA too, but not for Security so I don't know how much help I will be. What I gathered from visiting is that if you're interested in Security Studies than Pitt seems to be a great place for it. They have two research centers specifically for this and it seemed like it would be pretty easy to get involved with them in some capacity. (Most likely unpaid research) . The Security program was definitely the most popular program within GSPIA and the students that I talked to in the program seemed to really like it. I also heard that you can take some classes at CMU which is huge for research and right next door to Pitt. They do have a DC semester in the fall of your 2nd year and they share a building with the Maxwell and Korbel schools.

I think this decision really just depends on what you want to be doing after you graduate. If you have any questions about the campus or anything I might be able to help you more.

  8. Thanks, I'm sorry you didn't get in too....but I'm not sorry and I'm done stressing. You're very right, the bright side is that it's over. I'm not sure at this point which is better, the fact that this awful process is over or that I actually got in somewhere. I guess the combination of the 2 is pretty sweet. Are you waiting on any other schools?

I'm done waiting, thank god. Now I have to chose between Pitt's GSPIA and Boston University both for International Development.

  9. Hahaha...just got my reject letter from AU and my acceptance to George Mason at the same time...beautiful. Waitlisted at GW but rejected from American, I lost count of how many people on these boards posted their reject or waitlist decisions from GW and got INTO American. Looks like the admissions people who said there's no significance to the batches are big ol' liars...Ok, that sounds immature and they probably have to say that, but still. I also can't help to wonder if I had just submitted my app a little sooner that would have gotten me in. Anyway...aside from this little rant right here, I'm done, I'm relieved, I got in somewhere and I'm happy about it...and I also shredded my reject letter...done with American, so glad I don't have to think about this anymore....sorry to everyone else who has gotten the same letter and good luck to those who are on the waitlist.

I'm sorry you didn't get in. On the bright side, this is all over!

  10. I think I will take some satisfaction out of knowing that tomorrow is the day every last decision they have is going out in the mail...or at least so they say. Then it's just a matter of how fast that packet/reject letter is delivered to your mailbox. I live in Arizona :/

Since I live down the street from AU I'm hoping that speeds things up!

  11. One of my recommendation letters was sent pretty close to the deadline, to the point where I was nervous if it was going to make it. So that might be true about applications sent close to the deadline taking longer. I really appreciate the emailed responses even if they are rejections because then at least you know right away. One school even emailed me to say I got in and then said the letter will come later, why couldn't AU do that? Thanks for stressing us all out!
