  1. There's going to be a free workshop and campus tour event for the MSW program at UCLA this Saturday on December 1st. Even if you are not planning on applying to UCLA, please consider attending if you are in the SoCal area. There will be one-on-one personal statement help for all attendees, plenty of free UCLA swag, free breakfast and lunch, and many of the application readers will be present if you want to ask them questions about what they look for.

  2. Has anyone received the formal admission letter from the Graduated Division of UCLA? I got the admission letter via Email on March 30th, but I still have not heard anything from the graduate division...

I haven't yet, either and I heard in April. Apparently some should be sent out tomorrow. I'm more worried about financial aid at this point. Haven't heard a peep. I can't believe it's taken UCLA five months to get back to me...

  3. I'm also still waiting for UCLA....hopefully soon...I just need to know even if it is a rejection...

I went to the Admit day at UCLA today. Couple of thoughts:

    1. If you haven't heard about admission, you're still okay. They are going really slowly on these applications. They claim that the order you are admitted has no bearing on your qualifications or how favorable you are as a candidate (but I doubt it because the Department had a deadline to submit for Fellowships.)
    2. If you haven't been notified about receiving a scholarship, you didn't get one. Everyone who got one has been notified. The department has yet to notify the losers.
    3. In the coming weeks, the admissions officer will be sending out additional information on financial aid opportunities. These include those stipends where you have to promise to work for governmental agencies afterwards. They didn't sound very promising unless you were interested in child welfare.

Information about financial aid seemed very nebulous. =/ It looks like UCLA has been trying to be more warm fuzzy recently (big glamorous welcome weekends, butt kissing to proud parents of undergrads) to help mitigate angry reactions when the tuition inevitably goes up.

  4. Congrats! I saw that you said that it was the only place you applied. I decided on UCLA a couple days ago! Are you going to the Admit Day? I am debating going because I do not want to miss work. I was also a UCLA undergrad, so I feel like I don't really need a campus tour, etc. and I can wait until Fall to meet faculty and such.

I was also an undergrad Bruin (so I chuckled when the email said "we hope you will soon become a Bruin...") but I may go anyway. I'm hoping to meet some professors and particularly the field placement person at the Department. More to scope out the other admits and the future second-years than anything else.

  5. thestarsarealigned, I just heard back from UCLA a few minutes ago via email and thought I should post here to let you know. It was an acceptance (no word of fellowship) with the request that I notify the school of my decision to attend no later than April 15th, in a week. For anyone out there who is still waiting to hear from UCLA, don't rule out admission...

  6. I've also started making calls this week as well and have been checking the website incessantly but to no avail...voicemails at the department and no status updates on the website. I've always had a difficult time contacting the department though...so no surprise but still disappointed at this point because I would really like to know. My mind is sort of made up in regards to where I am going but I need to know one way or another from UCLA to fully weigh my options...

That's absurd that you've had to wait this long since December! I turned in mine in January and was told that my application was in review in early February...so I feel like I am losing hope and just knowing that the new admit welcome day is next week is just another reason to lose hope...

Maybe this is for the better...I was kind of dreading the possibility of moving and living in LA...but would have seriously considered it if UCLA was an option.

How did you hear about your application being in review? Did they send an email informing you that it is in review?

This is truly nailbiting. UCLA is the only school I applied to this year (made sense logistically.) I guess I thought I was a shoo in. I have lived experience as a person with a mental illness and my resume includes policy work for SAMHSA, the State Department of Mental Health, and the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health.

  7. Ahhh...was told by UCLA that decisions should be made by end of March - April 1st at the latest...still haven't heard from them...so anxious. I just need to know one way or another so I can move on and figure out where I'll be going....this waiting period is driving me crazy.

Is anyone else still waiting for UCLA? Should I just anticipate that I have been rejected since I haven't heard from them? I've called but no answer at the department and have checked my status online but it still states no decision has been made on my application...

I'm still waiting to hear from UCLA, too. I turned in my application on December 1st, weeks in advance of the deadline.

Since then, I haven't heard anything. This week I started making calls (no pick ups at the Department, just voicemail) and email but no response. The website doesn't show me anything, either. I'm kind of disappointed that I've heard nothing either way, given how expensive the fee ways.

What worries me is that according to their website, Social Welfare New Admit Welcome Day is next Tuesday, April 12th. If that's the case, then I'm losing hope.

According to the Department calendar, the MSW Admissions Committee is meeting again on April 11th. I have no idea what that means, though. It appears to be the last day the Committee will meet this year. Perhaps it is to rank and finalize the waitlist.
