  1. I live close to Main and Chicago in Evanston right now. My apartment is decent size and I pay less than 700/month including heat and water. In addition, my apt is less than 5 minutes walking to the El train station and the NU intercampus bus stop. It's not as bad as a lot of people said to live in Evanston. It's a very nice area. However, you may be able to find better deal in Roger Park, but you will have to commute further. I'm gonna be an official graduate student in Sept,, but working in a chem lab at northwestern for the summer. Let me know if you guys wanna hang out.

    Hi duncandam!

Thanks for your post. I was actually looking at a few places in the area around Mail El stop and found the prices to be reasonable. you mentioned it is a nice area... If you have time, would you mind telling me a bit more about the area? Is it safe? Are there a lot of coffee shops around? Are there grocery stores? Is it residential or are there restaurants/shops etc.?

    Many, many thanks in advance!

  2. Hi guys,

I'm a very awkward sort of person and going to an office of the cerebral gods I so admire (my profs) is very daunting... I also felt very awkward buying any sort of gift in the first place... But! I do think I should do something. So... A card for sure, but can anyone think of something else that is very non-awkward and non-committal... Chocolates feel so.... utterly over the top romantic (in my case anyway). Advice: much appreciated.

  3. I am working at a retail store (selling) and it is awful that I have three whole months left here! Now that I know where I will be doing my PhD (Northwestern whoo hoo) it's been hell trying to do well at work! I dream of dusty books and infinite libraries... I never thought I'd say this, but I yearn to write a paper! Instead, it's three more months of "Hi, can I help you find your size? All of our shorts are on promotion this week!" Sigh.

  4. Hi everyone!

Am going to Northwestern for German Lit and Critical Theory. I am very excited! :)

Now, what's all this about not living in Evanston? I was hoping to live as close to Uni as possible... Not a good idea??

  5. I think so. I just have to find time for it. Tickets to Raleigh from my hometown are very cheap for the end of March/early April. $115 round trip. Are you going to visit? So do they have a comparative lit program that you're joining? From the looks of your sig, you're into the joint German PhD, right?

Which program are you accepted to at UT? If it's the German program, are you going to visit this week?

I got into the English program at UT but I won't go for sure becasue I did my MA there (and my BA as am matter of fact).

I might visit UNC/Duke (yep, joint German) in a few weeks. I am visiting Penn and Brown in a week or so. Those are my top choices, and unless I get a bad vibe from both, I probably won't go for UNC. I still don't know, though. It's so tough to decide there things. So many factors: city, faculty, etcetc.
