Hi, I am getting a fellowship for the first time in my life, so I have some pretty dumb questions. How do you get the money you are supposed to be getting? Do you get it as a paycheck? Does it come once a week, once every two weeks, monthly, or does that depend on the kind of fellowship you're getting? Are there limits on what you can spend it on, or is it yours to use for anything? If I am getting 25,000 for a year, do I have to spend that money in that amount of time or not? Thank you.

Yes, I have been offered a VIGRE Fellowship, and I don't know a lot about it myself, but there are certain expectations (not necessarily requirements) that go with it. For example, I am expected to get familiar with someone's research in the second semester, to get involved in some organizations, and to pass my qualifying exams at the end of my first year. About getting a stab at TAing first - I feel like you will always have time for that since the Fellowship covers only first year.

I would like to know how competitive the program is, and how difficult it is to get in and get a scholarship.
