  1. My husband and I were engaged when we first started looking at graduate schools. I was looking for an MA program in music and he was looking to enter law school. We applied to Tufts/Harvard, UPenn/Upenn, Yale/Wesleyan, and a few other places. We each got into the programs but decided on the place that gave me a complete funding package. Separating was not really an option as we were planning to get married after our first year of graduate school. It has been a few years and now he has several law firm offers and I am applying for graduate school again. He has offers in Chicgo, Boston, and DC so my school choices were limited to those areas. We have both compromised quite a bit and it really has worked out well for us. He probably would have liked to go to Yale Law and I would have liked to attend SOAS in London, but we knew our relationship was a priority so we chose Cambridge. Now we are planning to have a beautiful Jewish family and our newest concern is how we can make all of this work. YIKES!! It is nice to know other graduate students are in this situation. Life can't stop because you want to continue with your education.
  2. There are actually quite a few programs that require students to go through the MA program before getting the PhD. I was fully funded for my MA so I know it is possible. I think you may be right with regard to how the economy will impact funding for MA students. I mean, even PhD applicants are feeling that crunch. What is your field? Where are you applying?
  3. I finally heard from one of my schools! I got into the PhD program at Maryland (TA+full tuition). I am now waiting for the official letter!
  4. I am not in a position to take out any more student loans. Although I was funded for my MA, my undergrad degree was pricey. My husband also took out TONS of loans to pay for Harvard Law... If I don't get funding I won't be going to graduate school. I really hope at least one program wants me My Maryland interview went well. They asked if I would like to teach u-grad classes. I hope I get something from them.
  5. When did your boyfriend get his Harvard letter? I didn't receive one today and I am just 2 miles from Harvard. I am, of course, expecting a deny as well.
  6. I hope ethnomusicologists are welcome here! I applied to four schools (Harvard, Chicago, Maryland, and Virginia). Harvard said letters were sent to all music applicants on February 20 (who knows what that really means). I haven't heard a peep from Chicago, though my professor said they take a little longer. I had an interview at Maryland and am waiting for an official decision letter. I have two friends at Virginia who said the adcom is still reviewing applications and inviting students to the campus for some get-to-know-you time. From what they said, the committee is not able to accept who they want because of funding issues. One of my professors forgot to send his letter to schools and I noticed it a few weeks ago. I have a feeling this will impact at least one decision as one committee had already started to seriously review applications a month before his letter was event sent I work in admissions myself and spend the better part of my day dealing with frantic parents/students. I know how these committees feel!! Anyways, good luck to all music applicants. I hope things work out for all!
