  1. I do work for a company right now but they're pretty stingy and won't pay for my education, especially when it's 42K. I don't think this statement is true. I met a lot of the people at the M.Eng orientation from all different disciplines and the majority of them had fresh Bachelor's degrees. This is not like an MBA where you need some work experience to get in.
  2. For all the people attending the new Master's of Engineering at Berkeley...how are you paying the 42k tution?? Are you just taking out loans? I've been trying to convince the engineering faculty to provide research and teaching assistantships for M.Eng, but in the meantime I really need to find another way. Has anyone figured out anything yet?
  3. Sorry to hijack your thread; but do you have any pointers into getting a job at NASA JPL? I'm a EECS BS graduate from Berkeley, Robotics option, 3.42 GPA class of '09. I've applied to many openings there for 8 months but still haven't gotten any response from any position.
  4. I have a question for everyone out there...will employers respect this degree? I feel like it's not a real master's program with research and a thesis, but a short accelerated professional degree.
  5. You can watch all the videos that were shown at Visit Day here: http://www.youtube.com/user/BerkeleyEngineering#p/c/FAAAA03DDA21CCA5 And a .wmv of a "mock class" about a Netflix case study: http://coemediasrv.coe.berkeley.edu/coe/m-eng/Sidhu.wmv As you can see, the program really focuses on leadership and entrepreneurship, with emphasis on the business aspect. The structure of the capstone project will be different for every major, but generally speaking you'll be with a team of 3-4 people, seeking to solve some industry problem. Every professor talked a little bit about the industry ties that they had; these teams can jump onto existing projects or if they have compelling projects that address some industry concern they can solve. In terms of resources, every research lab will put an effort to provide the resources needed for M.Eng students and their projects. I don't believe they would ever give funding to students but the existing resources are definitely there for the students to use. What do you mean by the official admit? You were suppoed to get an email with the official acceptance and a link to accept or decline the offer. This is the official way the University deals with admits.

I just got a short email from Caltech: "You will receive an email by April 15th." Graduate school require that you decide where to go by April 15th. How am I supposed to decide which school I want to go to?

I've been waiting as well. I applied to the master's program; still haven't heard anything yet.
  8. Everyone should have gotten responses around second week of March I believe. I was accepted to the Robotics program under EECS. I also agree with the sentiment that the standards were a little low; I actually got rejected from UCLA and got accepted here. I'm not sure about how to officially accept or decline offers, but you should be able to email the graduate division and ask for instructions. The deadline is April 15th. For those of you asking for the list of courses to take, you will have to take one engineering leadership class plus one capstone project engineering class for both semesters plus two techincal electives. Check out http://osoc.berkeley.edu/OSOC/osoc?y=12&p_term=FL&p_deptname=--+Choose+a+Department+Name+--&p_classif=G&p_presuf=--+Choose+a+Course+Prefix%2fSuffix+--&p_dept=ENGIN&x=30 for the engineering leadership and capstone project courses. You can generally check out schedule.berkeley.edu for any courses you want. For the technical electives, you can check out schedule.berkeley.edu as well. Here are the suggested courses for each division of EECS (check out "related courses"): Physical Electronics: http://www.eecs.berkeley.edu/Research/Areas/PHY/ Robotics: http://www.eecs.berkeley.edu/Research/Areas/CIR/ Visual Computing: http://www.eecs.berkeley.edu/Research/Areas/GR/ I went to the visit day last week; it was pretty sweet. We are the first class and that is going to be a bit of a challenge since we will be guinea pigs, but I feel like the professors will be able to give us more attention and we would have more leeway in what we want to do with our capstone projects because of the novelty of this program.
