  1. The email from Rick said we needed to secure transportation with US flag airlines, and linked to the Fly America Act.  However, the FAA also states that you can use int'l airlines with US gov't funding if their countries are in a bilateral/multilateral Open Skies Agreement.  So if your country has signed one of these agreements, I take this to mean you can fly with one of their national airlines?

Thank you everyone for all of the helpful comments! Even with the webinars, there is still not enough information out there about the process. How did you guys go about finding a host abroad? For example, was it an already established collaboration, or was the "cold-emailing" involved? If the latter, how did you come up with a specific project that would be reasonable to expect to accomplish with your host during your stay, especially if it's a fairly short (2-3 months) one?

I cold emailed.  I had an idea of the type of thing I wanted to study, but not a specific experimental design.  After he said he'd be interested, I came up with five designs which I emailed him, and we then discussed over Skype which research line made the most sense and would be most practical to implement in 12 months.

  3. I don't have SAD, but I have medication-resistant depression, so I feel ya.  I've been in remission for a while, but lately I've just been so stressed and anxious that I'm worried it's resurfacing.  In some ways it's nice it's summer because at least I don't have to worry about as many rigidly-scheduled responsibilities, but on the other hand, it's miserable seeing how relaxed and happy everyone else is while I'm still toiling away under this dark cloud.

  4. Apply the reviewers' comments, within reason -- you are unlikely to have the same reviewers next cycle.  Your proposal in general should be improved commensurate with your greater experience as a second year student.

For BI, try finding more concrete outreach, and then performing it.  This could mean mentoring students 1:1, talking about science on a public platform (blog, lectures in elementary/middle/high schools), or finding ways that any disadvantage from your own background has influenced your career and will contribute to your research being able to enhance the experiences of other disadvantaged people.  You can't overdo BI in my experience.  To the degree that BI can be integrated into both your research proposal and your personal statement, that's optimal.

This may be really dumb... but does anyone know what the subject line of the acceptance or the rejection email will say? lol

"2015 NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program Application Notification" is what it said last year.  It doesn't really give anything away in the subject line, which is good or bad depending on your perspective.

  6. I have a random question. Does nsf look negatively on those that currently hold fellowships? I mentioned that I had a fellowship but stupidly did not mention that it is only 2 years. I tried to change the info but could not per nsf policy.

I already had a university fellowship when I applied, and it was cited in my reviews as meritorious and likely helped me get the NSF.  Awards beget awards and so on.

First off, shout out the the awesome person who shared their budget proposal w/me.  That was super helpful. Also, I was wondering, is anyone else applying to both the GROW and the EAPSI programs for the same country? Did you find you could reuse much of the same application? My country has a pretty short minimum stay so most of my application remains the same - I am hoping there is no overlap in the review committees.

Would whoever this was be willing to share with me too?  This is the last thing on my list and I'm having Issues. Thanks!

  8. I had 7 references.  They were footnotes, every single paper with >2 authors was 'et al.', and I used abbreviations in journal names.  Seriously, there are no guidelines for the references, so do what you have to do to save space.  It won't disqualify you.

It is an awkward balancing act though.  Too few references and your project idea isn't theoretically supported. Too many and it's unoriginal.

  9. I took two, 200-level courses at a community college in 2012 (after completing my bachelors, one course a semester for 2 semesters). I do not think of them as graduate level courses at all, but technically I was a postbacc since I had already gotten my bachelors. Now I am in a PhD program for just under the 1 year mark. Do those two courses screw my eligibility? Would this qualify as part time graduate studies before my PhD?

How do I even list this on my application? Would I say I was an undergrad for these courses? or not applicable? It was a community college, so there are no official graduate studies there.

Nope you're totally fine.  By graduate coursework they mean graduate-level classes at a graduate degree-granting institution, not cc classes you took for fun that just happened to be after you graduated.

  10. The guidelines say that fonts in figures also have to be Times New Roman 10-pt. Does anyone know how picky they are about this? I'm paranoid that sizing my figures will make the font too small for the guidelines.

Let's just put it this way: don't get yourself disqualified over something like font.

  11. Ah awesome, congrats! I imagine you addressed the gap years in the personal statement? That probably made your application more interesting to the reviewers.

Well, I did research during my gap years (full-time), so I talked about how that furthered my academic goals and led to the development of my current research interests.

  12. An aside: I ended up postponing graduate school until spring 2016 because of an internship offer, so I can apply as an undergrad senior again (I think), because I haven't taken any grad classes. Has anyone else done this?

I did!  I applied twice as an 'undergrad' (once while still in undergrad, the second time while reapplying after deciding to take 2 gap years) and got it as a first year grad student.  As long as you haven't taken more than whatever number it is of grad hours, you're golden.
