Can't stay positive. I realized that many students in the program are a little bit too well established.
If not academically, at least professionally. A couple of them have even published their own books
before they got into the program. That's simply too much.
oh ic. that's very helpful info.
honestly i don't think i can get in b/c my application is pretty rushed.
but I hope you guys will hear good news soon.
and Oseirus - thanks for all the postings and discussions.
I applied to the dual degree program also. Turned in the application very late
and just wanted to give it a try. Reading their website gives me the impression
that they try to recruit students from different backgrounds and have a truly
diverse group to match the name of the program. And it's very expensive!
Was surprised that there are 200+ applicants and they only take about 20 students.
Oseirus, where did you get this information?
Ahh my situation is even worse. I emailed one department enrollment secretary almost 10 days ago
and never got a response. I tried to call her but was directed to the answering machine. I left a
message but never got called back. Finally I just gave up. What else can I do? :|
I'm not an Econ major so I don't think I can comment on the qualities of these three programs.
Overall, UofA and U Waterloo are far better than Guelph (to be honest, I don't even know where it's located)
U Waterloo is in London (a really small city though not far away from Toronto, about 2 hour drive). I've heard
life is just boring there. UofA is in Edmonton (a major city here). It's certainly a small one compared with,
say, Vancouver and Seattle. But.. at least you will have a life. Though many students don't like Edm at
all.
Congratulations!!
I think you responded to my thread "NYU Gallatin" last week. I haven't heard anything from Gallatin.
When did you send your application in?
minilop, go for it.
There has been a lot of debate on this issue. Most people look at it from a more "instrumental" perspective.
An MALS degree is not well recognized as the traditional one. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of this
program, this degree brings about a lot of trouble when you want to find a job. But many people forget that
the establishment of such a program is precisely the backlash against the heavy industrialization and
professionalization of the academia. Hmm... I personally believe that the interdisciplinary programs are the
refuge the leftist intellectuals create for themselves. (Go check the faculty members of those programs)
I think I understand your painful experience and its consequences. Life is not easy - this is especially true for
romantics/idealists/perfectionists. (You may not be one of them but it's very likely that you are Sorry about
the psychoanalyzing ) MALS programs do provide you the opportunity to discover why you like learning in the
first place... This is what MALS programs are created for.
Some people say you will not be properly trained because MALS programs are not as tightly structured as the
traditional ones. I'd say that this looseness can be turned into a big advantage. You're allowed to structure
your courses around your own objectives. Properly structured, you can actually acquire a very strong background
in history. In this case, you are the trainer and trainee at the same time. The difference between the two is only that
you are more disciplined by others in a traditional MA program, while you need to discipline yourself in an MALS program.
Thanks for the reply. I found this on GSAS website:
When will my admission decision be mailed?
We begin mailing admission decisions for the coming fall semester in mid to late March. Decisions are not available via email, phone, or fax.
I guess you are right. I would not hear from Gallatin until Mid March.
Ah maybe I should just give them a call and find out.
Hi,
Has anyone applied to the MA program at Gallatin school? I sent in my application in late Jan but haven't
heard a thing since then. Someone from another forum told me that (s)he got the notification about one
month and half after the submission. But that's the case for the spring term application...I suppose it would
then take a longer time to know the admission result for the fall term. Any ideas?
Ahh, I guess guys like mungdaddy, Schoolisfun, bahisaay will never come back to this thread.
So let's start our own
Are you applying for East Asian Studies (EAS)? If so, which schools are you interested in?
And what is your major at this moment?
Me: political science major, interested in Harvard, Stanford, Berkeley, UW...
Hope to see your replies soon!
Cheers, arc.
Hey guys, I will start to apply for EAS MA programs (2008) this year. Schools I'm interested in are
Harvard, Duke, Stanford, and U of Washington...
Questions for Schoolisfun and Bahisaay...I heard roughly about 150 people applied to Harvard for RSEA AM.
So which evaluating criterion did you find most important? (State of Purpose, Writing Sample, GRE, GPA, Recommendation
letters..) Thanks a lot!
