Just found out I was accepted to Tyler! Very excited about this. So now it's down to Tyler or Cranbrook and I have to decide this weekend. Any thoughts?
Congrats to all the good news out there!

Really could use some thoughts/advice on which program to attend cafe friends. SVA (Fine Art) or Cranbrook (Painting).
I know I'll have more studio time at Cranbrook, and probably work closer with the artist in residence and classmates there than any of the big wig profs at SVA, but SVA is in New York, and therefore any connections I did make would ultimately be city connections... Eventually I would like to be in New York (as would most of us I assume) however, I'm not sure that that should influence my choice as I'm going to one or the other for the 2yr program and New York isn't going anywhere.
I still haven't heard back from VCU or Tyler (finalist) but I have to let Cranbrook know by april 2nd..... aghh
What should I do...!?
p.s. Ultimately I feel fortunate to be faced with this dilemma, but having a really difficult time coming up with a firm decision, apologies if this comes off as conceited...

Got accepted into Cranbrook last week for Printmedia, anybody else I may see in the fall around here??
Congratulations! You may see me, I'm trying to decide between School of Visual Arts (fine art) and Cranbrook (painting). Two very different programs.....I'm visiting SVA tomorrow so that may help me come to a decision.
If anyone has any thoughts on those two schools by all means I'd love to hear them.
-
Honesty, I haven't heard good things about SVA - They are very expensive and offer very little in ways of funding. I have also heard that their grad studios aren't great and that while "big name" people teach there, they often spend very little time outside of their classes either in the facilities or with the students. I've heard this both from those who are in and outside of New York. Granted, it could be different now - my advice is, if you can, go and check it out for yourself. You'll be the one to decide and make sure you ask them about the things I just said.
I have to agree with "miyamoto81" on this as well for the fine art (not so on the graphic design, where you get a ton of attention from the pros), and the film dept is also likewise known for being riDICulously expensive (a friend of mine paid his MFA off after about 10 years...while bringing in a six figure salary as an art director)...
That being said, miyamoto81, it looks like you applied and got into CalArts...that school is just as bad as SVA for $...I have a friend in their Director's program and she's going to end up with well over 120K in debt, and she says the fine art people are only better off because they are a 2 year program instead of three...
I appreciate those thoughts and they don't surprise me... Of course I'm still going to visit next week.
Cheers to all!

Anyone have any thoughts on the SVA mfa in Fine Arts program? much appreciated and happy sunday

Yeah. I was one of them. It was awful.
I was too and crushing is a good way to put it... In the long run though I think it helped fuel my studio practice this past year. All in the past...
Enjoy the weekend y'all!

Has anyone been invited for an interview by the painting department at Cranbrook yet?
Hey congrats on your SAIC interview! I'm going out for my interview with Cranbrook next week also. I'm really looking forward to seeing the campus and meeting everyone. I've never been so feel free to let me know anything about the area. I see you are from Michigan which is why I ask... Best of luck with the rest of your process!

I have had two different teachers in undergrad who went to Cranbrook. Both were great. Both got teaching jobs early in their careers. Also, if you are need based cranbrook will help you out if you fill out your fafsa. Not as much as some schools, but certainly a nice chunk of change.
If you are a successful artist, with gallery respresentation, grants, impressive residencies, and or public art pieces, ect. there are schools that will want to hire someone like you. Cranbrook will focus on your studio practice. They are very straightforward in explaining this.
Getting teaching experiance is a good way to build a path toward teaching, but talk to your past proffessors and you will see that many did not follow that path. There are tons of different paths in something as happenstance as the art world. There are great teachers and artists who come from such a diverse background of schools. So my advice is to go to the school you are most excited about. Don't feel that you need to go to the "biggest most reputable school." Go to a program you like. And if you don't want student loans, take that into consideration too.
Thank you, I was going to respond to that post as you did. I've also had and known a number of tenured professors who went to Cranbrook for either their undergrad or graduate degrees. Most universities are concerned with your "research" record more than the breadth of your teaching experience.

You can throw my name into the Hunter reject bucket... Here's to a good weekend and better news next week for everyone!

Just visited Cranbrook. Cranbrook is an amazing amazing place. If you are unsure about it, visit it! Talk to students there! You will understand why it is great.
Great News! Sleep well... I'm looking forward to seeing the school in a little over a week....

Emailed about an interview at RISD today! This is for painting MFA
That's great news! I'd love to see your work, care to share you website with us?

@Fool4nine-
Thank you for your response. That's all reassuring to hear and I think I can do that (sans "like).
Ugh those Tyler and Columbia e-vites are killing me!
Congrats to the Rutgers and UCLA acceptances, heres hoping there are still a few notices left to be sent...

Accepted to Rutgers and interviewed at Cranbrook today. Interviews coming up for VCU and Temple/Tyler.
Wonderful news! Congrats! How was Cranbrook? I'm interviewing there in two weeks and am awfully anxious...
-
Yeah I actually have an interview there too for painting. Its actually on the 10th. Luckily I already got into one of my top choices, so I'm not stressed about it. Of course I know I'll still get butterflies as the interview gets closer. Goodluck to the other Hunter interviewees! I'm really looking forward to checking out the campus and current student work.
Congrats on Tyler acceptance! How and when were you notified, you seem to be the first person on this forum whose gotten their acceptance notice?
-
You just made me happy and I'm very grateful. THANK YOU.
ditto, I was getting worried... It's reassuring to hear that some of these schools are sending out interview notices in rounds. Every Monday that goes by without fresh word is painful! Congrats to all that have heard warm news
-
I'm also interviewing at hunter, I got an email about it last week.
I'm quite nervous about it, this is my third time applying to schools and hunter is at the top of my list. Thank goodness for this forum...such a relief to see the amount of support being offered.
@kazoo although I don't write much on here I really appreciate reading your posts, i find them very uplifting
Congrats! Go Get 'em!

Ah, that definitely makes sense. Congrats on your acceptances, too! I'm glad things are working out for you this year.
I'm only 23, and my undergrad professors definitely beat it into our heads how difficult getting into grad school was going to be. I would hope this is typical, so everyone understands what they're getting into when they set their sights on the big names. I decided to throw my lot in anyway, but I won't take it personally or slow down if things don't go my way this time around.
Well said...
Congrats to all the acceptances and hope everyone else is keeping their heads up. I remember Professor Waltemath telling me literally, "It's a bit of a crapshoot" at the MICA open house. Keep in mind they're ethnic/gender quotas and a need for balance/cohesion within the crop of prospective incoming students, as well as between current grad students and current faculty. In short, a rejection shouldn't be taken personally but that being said, I know how it feels and it's a lot easier to say that than to feel that when the time comes... It's also something as artists that we'll need to get used to swallowing, and channeling towards pursuing our goals with even more vigor.
Enjoy the weekend friends, I expect a big week of notices forthcoming...
-
are you sure they interview everyone?
Tyler, for example, interviews photography finalists, but apparently not painting finalists.
I'm curious, how do you know that? I was under the impression Tyler painting also interviewed.
-
Congratulations to everyone on their interviews, and best of luck!! Still waiting with fingers crossed to hear back from some of these painting programs... I'm assuming no news by the end of this week is not a good sign....

Amen
hallelujah Amen!!! Sending positive vibes to everyone in anticipation of a big week of notices....

Hey GCeramics,
Don't be bummed those are two great schools! I'll be honest, I applied to a few schools last year so this was my second time around and this past year was a much needed year in my studio. Granted I worked in my studio like a full time job (certainly as much or more than I would have if I had taken some of the schools up on their post-bac offers).
If you aren't happy with your options and you can afford to wait another year what's the harm? Chances are you'll have a stronger portfolio and another year to mature. On the other hand if you're set on going this year, I'd visit both schools and try and get a sense of what the current grad students are like and whether or not they seem to fit in with your work rate/personality/portfolio, and push for as much financial credit as you can and get.
Best of luck to you!
