  1. Thanks for the advice. Looks like I will play it pretty safe for now.
  2. I have an upcoming interview for a Sociology Grad Program at a school that has a stigma for being a conservative Christian institution. In thinking through questions I want to ask faculty, I am trying to decide how to best ask about this stigma and how fair, if at all, this stigma might actually be, and also how such an environment might affect the research and expectations of the grad students. I am pretty liberal myself, and have a suspicion that many of the staff are as well, and want to get a general feeling of the overall program. I don't want to perpetuate a stereotype or seem like I am questioning the academic integrity of the faculty. Any thoughts? Thanks!
  3. Anyone else apply to their Soc program? Any news yet? Invites had been sent by this time last year but I haven't seen anything posted yet.
  4. UT Austin Rice Baylor Oklahoma Texas A & M Religion and Gender/Sexuality
  5. This may seem like a stupid question, but because of things I have read in the past, I just want to make sure I don't make a mistake in my SOP. I am interested in the studying adolescent homosexuality within religious communities and am currently stating that I would like for my research to develop theory that might be used in the future by organizations seeking to help young homosexuals. Again, it seems that I have heard varying opinions about this but wanted to hear if anyone has any thoughts about this? Thanks.
  6. I am applying to sociology programs next year with basically the same plan as you- (re)take the GRE and get some research experience. Getting research experience is a bit tougher for we who are not currently in an undergrad program. On top of that, I am in the middle of nowhere. But I decided to email a professor at a nearby midsized university with an undergrad program in sociology fully expecting to not hear back. Basically I told him my situation and that I could help do pretty much any research for free. And I was right. I didn't hear anything back. But then a month later out of the blue he responded and said he had a couple of possibilities. Things have moved kind of slowly but I am currently helping with a couple of research projects doing basic lit review and data compilation stuff. He has been totally helpful for no apparent reason. I figured he would use his undergrad students for stuff like that. The research is close to my interests and I am hoping it will really bolster my applications. All that to say that I would totally recommend reaching out to some profs. Just be honest about your interests but open to doing anything really. The initiative and experience will surely look good to admissions committees.
  7. This might sound bad, but could it be beneficial to list schools even if you don't really plan to apply there? I have a couple safety schools that I wouldn't want to list and a couple schools that are stronger and pretty good fits for my research that I'm not going to apply to. Just a thought.
  8. Thanks everyone for the advice. My wife had been telling me to retake the GRE and I really didn't want to mess with it, but it seems like the logical thing to do. As far as program location, I was trying to stay in the northeast if possible because my wife is wanting to do art conservation and the only 3 programs in the U.S. are in the Northeast. I have been researching the programs more in depth and will probably add a couple with more known Sociology of Religion programs closer to home (UTexas and Rice). Thanks again!
  9. I'm new to the gradcafe and have really enjoyed and benefited from many of the posts. I was hoping that I might receive some feedback concerning my chances/options for PhD studies in Sociology. My stats: B.A. in Religion (3.86 gpa) from a small, relatively unknown private univ Master of Divinity (3.5 gpa) from a well known, larger private univ. GRE: 620 Verbal/ 600 Quant/ 4 AW I have no research experience directly related to Sociology, but I hope to study Sociology of Religion, which would fit nicely with my Master's degree and experience working in churches and non-profits. These are the schools I am considering applying to: CUNY, NYU, Stony Brook, New School, Northeastern, Brandeis, Rutgers, Boston Univ, Loyola Chicago On a separate issue, I am worried about my religious background and how it will appear on my application. My undergrad and graduate schools were both Baptist, and I fear that this will automatically label me as a conservative, fundamentalist, which is definitely not the case. Should I worry about this? Should I discuss this issue in my SOP? Thanks so much for any thoughts.
