  1. Hello, I am just wondering what are the opinion of people on the issue of when to start grad school. Like of people have been saying that I should consider starting my grad studies in the summer. is it really necessary? or is it just fine if i start during the usual time, during the fall quarter? any suggestions are appreciated!
  2. Hello, So, I will be visiting the PhD program in chemistry that I have been admitted to and talking with some of the professors there. I am just wondering how I should go about preparing for the interviews with the professors, and what type of questions/answers I should be thinking about to prepare myself. 4. I was in the same position as you several weeks ago when I was deciding where to do. I ended up deciding to go to UC-Irvine because the professors there publish on a regular basis and the reputation of the department is known worldwide. Even though most people enjoy sun and the weather of Cali, I personally love the rain of the midwest and the east, but at the end of the day you don't want to spend 5 years at an institution that's not known for their chemistry program. TAMU is a great school, so is Georgetown, but just not for chemistry. so here is what you should do: look up the professors you want to work for, and look at their recent publications, look at the type of grants that they receive, and then decide base on those factors.
  5. There are several professors in the Chemical Biology division that I am really interested in working with. I have not visited yet, but I plan to after my graduation. Anything else you remember about their chemistry department that you liked/disliked? Thanks again
  6. Is there anyway i can find out if UC-Irvine has an exam that they give to their entering grad students? I've tried calling but the secretary doesn't seem to know
  7. Hi, I am new to The Grad Cafe! So, I am going to UC-Irvine for PhD studies in Chemistry, and just got couple of questions for people who know some stuff about the school. 1. Should I be considering starting early? Because, I was told classes start September 20 or so, but I want to get a head start and possibly start during July. And, what is the general process for starting early? 2. I hear that some schools give their graduate students exam on the first day to see if they need any remedial courses, I am just wondering if anyone is aware if UC-Irvine gives their new grad students such exam? If so, how should I go about preparing for it? I appreciate any other tips/help Thanks!
