  1. Ahlan wa sahlan! It's quite impressive that you're reading Muslim classical philosophers... after four years of Arabic, I can barely read the Qur'an. I would say the next step you take will depend on what, exactly, you want to study. If you'll be studying the Greek roots of Islamic philosophy, then I would say you should focus on learning Greek (maybe get a postbacc), since your Arabic is already advanced. I'm not sure how helpful going to Cairo would be. I understand that those programs are aimed more at improving your speaking, not your reading, skills. Reading skills are obviously more helpful for a graduate program. Again, I'm not quite sure what you want to do, but you might also take a look at Yale's Graeco-Arabic program.
  2. Your ancient languages are a little skimpy, but colleges will probably be impressed that you've had French and German. My advice is that you not worry about your chances. I know people want to hear "Wow, you're a shoe-in!" or, "Looks good, but you should work on X, X, and X," but none of us know what our chances are because too much depends on what schools you apply to, the relative competition there, and how good a fit, and how much potential, the admissions committee thinks you have. I've seen people with what I thought were very good credentials rejected and I've seen people with a year or two of Greek accepted. It's a crapshoot. On a personal note, like you, I'm from the ass-end of the country (Oklahoma, to be specific). I was rejected for two years in a row but I kept plugging away and now I'm at a great school. Don't worry about how other people are doing; just keep working to make yourself the best that you can be.
  3. I'll delurk to say that I have one of the Notre Dame interviews. I got my bachelor's from an undistinguished state university in the Midwest, so needless to say, I'm excited. I'm on the Greek side, particularly Hellenistic, of things and I do Arabic as well, so Notre Dame is a top choice for me. Good luck this month, everyone!
  4. Minnares, that's very true. This is my second year to apply, actually (wah wah wah). I'm definitely not giving up on the long-term dream of getting a doctorate, but I think it is useful to realize when something isn't going to work out in the immediate future and plan accordingly. For everyone getting rejections, apply again next year! I was a much better candidate this year than I was last year (although still not good enough, haha sob). My professors told me it was fairly common not to get in your first time around. Oh yeah, and M, keep up the good fight. I wish you the best of luck in your perfect storm year. My roommate is almost fifty and she's getting her PhD this year. You're not alone!
  5. I sympathize with Hermes' sentiment. I've been studying classics for fourteen years now and it was my dream to become a professor in the field. But it's not going to happen, so I'm shooting to study in Jordan this summer and use the rest of the year to improve my Arabic. For what ultimate purpose, I have no idea, but it's pretty much the only useful skill I have.

    Classics 2010

Soul Invictus, I certainly think it's possible that not everyone gets invited to the visitation weekend. Neither of my friends who were accepted to graduate schools last year received any such invites. Soooo, maybe there is hope? Also, I was intrigued to see the UChicago reject on the results page, as I thought they didn't start sending out letters until March.
