  1. procrastinatrice, I hope you don't mind me asking: could you please elaborate about what you've heard regarding Columbia? And is this related to a specific field? I got accepted there and to another place... I'm in theory, though must admit was rather discouraged due to what I've just read here . So, any thoughts regarding Columbia in general? Theory specifically? Anything would be highly appreciated Thanks!
  2. Hi, 1. BA - dual major Comm and PS (political Science); MA - PS 2. International, not that known 3. Very high, international not on a scale of 4. (Summa Cum Laude) 4. 680v 740q 5 5. thesis 6. 5 years TA and research 7. all my recommenders but one were not from Communication but from PS. All but one are pretty anonymous. I think it's mainly luck as I was rejected by most places.. Good Luck!
  3. Actually in my country they are really in need for more comm. professors and I know a lot of people here, so I have better chances of finding a place to teach etc. when I'm done. Can't say the same about PS... damn Cannot "sell my soul" to the formalist quantitative methods... I have no problem incorporating them into in-depth research, but they do not stand alone in my book. So perhaps we'll meet there? Columbia's having open house at the end of March as well. I'm flying in especially and will try to work in the west coast... Columbia - I've been offered 22.5 per year, full tuition, health and aid with housing. No idea if this is considered good or not. I need to call USC and find out more from them (the short e-mail asked that I call them). Once again - nice "meeting" you and thank you for all your help -Sue
  4. Thanks! I'm not a rational choice person. More a philosophy type... Let's say I really wish I had the chance to work with the late Silverstone from LSE - his philosophical and inter-disciplinary points of view are right up my ally. I did not even apply to NYU because I knew their orientation was quantitative and strict. I did see that the Columbia theory faculty is more philosophy oriented. I'm now trying to go over recent course syllabuses to see what they actually teach. I do not fear a method course here or there. But I already have an MA and am at a point a would really like to choose my orientation. Are you going to USC? Haven't called them yet (time gap!), do you know if they are holding an open house? How do you feel about moving from a city like NY to LA? Thanks so much for the kind answers! I never imagined I would actually be posed with such a dilemma! I was not very optimistic
  5. USC is excellent, of course, and highly-regarded. Check out the 2004 NCA rankings. If you're interested in (entertainment) media studies, USC is *the* place to be. But where's your other offer, and what are your research interests? If you're undecided, you should make a decision by comparing the two schools, not by trying to understand one or the other in isolation. -Sue
  6. Hello, I have officially decided to join your forum I just received a positive reply from USC. I am a bit confused as I hardly know a thing about this program. Mainly, what is its reputation? Forgive my pragmatic approach; I really need to know how the USC program is viewed as I am considering another offer (different major). In addition
