    NSF GRFP

To weigh in: a fellow research assistant decided to not apply to grad school this year, although he had already submitted the NSF. He spend ages on the phone with the NSF people, because it's complicated to withdraw apparently. Anyway, he asked them why so late, and the Director of the NSF said it was purposefully delayed as to not influence admissions (although he admitted it did change admissions sometimes, as people got moved off the waitlist or accepted into a different place because they had funding, but at least everyone's on the same playing field to get in).
  2. Alum from UChicago here, definitely haven't heard so I assume rejection. SO annoying! But I emailed Kathy Anderson last week, basically saying if I haven't heard it's a no, right? I figured she'd tell me my status, but instead she wrote this back (this was on Feb 27): "Thank you for your e-mail. Some decisions are pending but the Dean of Students hoped to get most letters out this week." That's it! I mean, MA decisions haven't gone out yet, and a lot of the time Chicago offers PhD applicants admission in CIR or MAPPs, so that could explain some of the delay. But yeah, no love for the alums.
  3. Aren't waitlisted people usually notified the same time as admits, though? I feel like that happens a lot of times on the boards, in which case if you're not on that waitlist, then you're relying on the original acceptances to bail, then the waitlisted people to fall through, then you might get offered admission. Probably unlikely right, if you see both admits and waitlisted people notified at the same time? I mean, there is some logic to being a graduate department and "holding on" to some people without dealing with the hassle of telling them they are on a waitlist, because meanwhile those candidates won't take offers from other schools or give up unless they've heard. But I don't know if that's me being just optimistic (I'm waiting for two schools still, but admits went out two weeks ago)....
  4. I'm comparative and accepted at UCLA, and I just informally turned down the offer w/ full funding. Have to wait until the status shows up on the website to decline fully, but they know I'm not coming or taking the fellowship.
  5. At least in my experience with the other schools, if you haven't heard by now it's not a good sign (or you're some random and weird exception!). You never know, but Columbia's open house is March 25-27, and they already asked for RSVPs, etc. Good luck with the other schools though!!
  6. Wait, can you elaborate on the board or no? I'm interested in the answer too, Columbia sounds good on paper but I have no clue what the real story is!
  7. I'm dealing with this issue too -- my frontrunners are Columbia Political Science and Harvard's Public Policy Phd.... I'm definitely a political scientist, I do European politics. My initial thought was Columbia, but everyone keeps saying go to Harvard! Worried that the Pub Pol degree would put me on a different track than my fellow political scientists, although in past years Pub Pol Phds from Harvard have been successful on the Political Science job market.... anyone have any thoughts?
  8. Passed on UCLA yesterday. Had full funding, one of their "best packages" according to the letter, so hopefully someone who can swim and likes hot climates will benefit!
  9. Anyone have thoughts on Columbia political science, specifically comparative? I know they are strong in IR. I study Europe, trying to decide between Columbia political science and Harvard Public Policy....
