I'm a SOCI masters student here and Amy (the graduate director) is wonderful. The main problem, from what I understand when it comes to the PhD program, was that when the school told the dept that they'd be creating a PhD program, the school did not give the Anthropology/Sociology Department any additional funds or leave to hire additional faculty to help with the load. Hence the funding issues for PhD students. I'll be here next semester and would love to actually have some kind of social interaction with other grad students on this bloody campus.

If anyone is going to GMU, I'd take a look at Masonvale, it's right next to the campus and while they have decided to pretty much change everything on my lease next time I renew, I couldn't find a better deal for the area. Now if I could just find another roommate to move in

Five years later and it's still a suburban hell / wasteland of normality.

I've been in the Sociology masters program for the last year. Love the department, but after my five years at VCU, I'm missing VCU's campus and Richmond a great deal. Half the time I'm on campus here I feel like I walked into an abrocrombe and fitch ad. That and the social isolation from non-grad students has had it's toll. Add that to trying to find new roommates since both are moving out (one with his GF and one because the new place has access to a baby grand,) and it's been nice and stressful. It would be wonderful to meet some other grad students in this wasteland of normality.

I was just about to ask that question since I'm finishing my second semester in that program.
