As an Emory alum, I can assure you that Atlanta has many more global opportunities than just CDC (though sometimes it does feel a little like Rollins is an MPH mill for CDC!). Additionally, the school has a lot of funding and summer practicum opportunities. Take a look at GFE (global field experience) info on the website. Everyone in my cohort, both inside and outside the global health department, that wanted to get international experience did so and received financial assistance from the school. One of my friends from Emory now works at the NYC health department and another is at ICF in NY, so being all the way south won't hurt your connections terribly! Hopefully you can make it to Visit Emory (and whatever Columbia's equivalent is) since that should give you a feel for your cohort and some of the program offerings. Resources and colleagues should DEFINITELY factor into to your decision. I hope that helps. Good luck!

I was admitted and almost enrolled. It's research, a good location, and the faculty member I was going to work with is quite dedicated. It was a tough decision saying no.

How did it go? Heard anything? Waiting is killing me...
No from GW, but I'd already said yes to UNC. Also got a yes from UIC.

Hi! I currently live in Chapel Hill. There are definitely places to live in around campus, but there's been some chatter about rising rent prices in order to attract a certain crowd, so a lot of people are heading 10 minutes down the road to Carrboro. Still, there are plenty of apartment complexes and decently priced houses hidden about if you're ready to hunt and have Google maps open in another window to estimate walking/biking times. I don't have a car, so I can't offer much in terms of venturing outside of campus unless you want to know about the nearest Target.
And the "teenage things" issue really depends on where you are. Carrboro isn't as compact as Franklin St, etc so if most people wanna party, they're heading to Franklin St. However, on my block there are mostly families, so noise is not an issue. I will say, Carrboro definitely has more of the 20-something scene in terms of coffee shops that also hold ballroom dance groups and bands, to Weaver St Market, where you can buy a beer and then go sit outside at a picnic table and hang out. Carrboro is also where the comedy club is and where some pretty casual bars are located as well. You're definitely not going to find the frat crowd~ in Carrboro unless you're at a house party. There's also a convenient Harris Teeter and a bike path that cuts through to one of the main roads leading into campus.
I hope this captured what you were looking for!
Thanks, that's helpful. I'm a little concerned about the whole college town thing, especially since I prefer city life and walkability. I have a car, though, so I'm more flexible in terms of location than just Carrboro. I wonder if I'll be surrounded by Duke fans if I live in Durham, though... Lol

Just heard today, FYI--was invited for an interview for the GW DrPH Health Behavior Program next week. Hope you got good news too!
Yeah, actually! Interview this Thursday! Good luck!

So since most of these posts are older, I figured I'd ask an updated question (especially since I'd like to know) - is Carrboro like the only place to live? And will I be neighbors with a bunch of undergrads doing teenage things?

Got into UNC's Health Behavior PhD program!! I applied back in November for those still waiting to hear. I'm pretty much over the moon...
Also as an FYI, I didn't get into several lower ranked schools last cycle. I was disheartened (ok devastated) but so glad it worked out this way!
Fit is everything!
Good luck everyone and may the odds be ever in your favor!

Hi All,
I applied to the George Washington SPH DrPH program in Health Behavior and haven't heard anything yet, FYI.
Samesies! Another month to go maybe?
-
MPH(D?), did you apply to the online DrPH program? Or a PhD? I was looking into both, but they didn't seem to offer much funding... Curious about your thoughts.
For UIC? I did PhD. When I talked to one of the professors there, he said they offered funding on a case by case basis, but usually were able to find everyone. Same with UNC. Maybe it's a public school thing, but I noticed that private institutions seem more likely to mention funding up front? Has anyone else had a similar experience?
-
Finally, someone else! I applied to UNC, GW (DrPH), and UIC. Based on previous years on gradcafe results for these schools, I still have like another torturous month to wait....

I swing violently between "IM NOT GETTING IN ANYWHERE IM GOING TO FAIL LIFE AND DIE ALONE" to "THEY WOULD BE LUCKY TO HAVE ME." Until I receive word one way or the other, I am going to be mentally unstable and volatile. Apologies to all who have to be near me.
This! I've also watched almost all of Netflix, read most of the library, taught myself how to knit, then crochet, and working to save up for the move (I hope I hope I hope I hope)

I just got another email from Emory saying that my stuff has been forwarded to my departments of choice. My application is finally, finally complete (I hope). I guess the previous two emails didn't count?
Just got my MPH from Emory - departments make the final decisions. Admissions emails usually go out mid-to-late January from the department ADAPs. Good luck, Rollins was an amazing experience!!!

Congrats! PhD or DrPH?Hello everyone: This is down to the wire! ahhhhhhhh bit of good news: I got into PITT's doctoral program for Behavioral and Community Health Science this week wahoo! I am so honored and delighted with the opportunity. They have a great program and I am super excited. I look forward to hearing how things shape up in the coming week. I imagine this is the week where stuff gets a' shakin. Good luck everyone! -
I use Dropbox (highlighting and notes on the iPad with access on all other things) to store and an endnote/word combo for referencing. Had to do a couple of lit review for manuscripts, so I developed a table that has saved my life a bunch of times.

Panache and MPH(D?) did Pitt ever schedule you, I got an interview request from them today which I am super excited about but a little scared about getting it scheduled!
Friday, 10am...
Also, I think the snowstorm slowed them down a touch.

Thanks. I did, and her response was that they've had soke scheduling issues but they were still really interested in interviewing me. She hoped to get back to me by the end of this week, but said follow up with her Monday if I didn't. The whole thing makes me want to curl up into the fetal position...congrats MPH(D?) I applied to that program too but haven't heard back at all , that's weird they won't schedule you--maybe give them a call to see if your email just got lost in the shuffle? I'd say check MammaD, its good to know either way. Good luck! -
So if you're like me, you're trying (desperately) to occupy your time with something, anything other than obsessing about the wait. I personally have started to obsess over Levenger notebooks for some reason: http://www.levenger.com/Circa-Notebooks-326.aspx
What are you doing to make it through days?

Behavioral and Community Health Sciences... If they ever actually schedule me... I'm turning into THAT person lol Def googled the lady that emailed me to make sure she was legit.

I worked exclusively outside of my department during my MPH years and will likely be working on a super interdisciplinary project when I start PhD in the fall. Do it! Collaboration across disciplines is vital (and a future selling point for you!).
