  1. I worked exclusively outside of my department during my MPH years and will likely be working on a super interdisciplinary project when I start PhD in the fall. Do it! Collaboration across disciplines is vital (and a future selling point for you!).
  2. As an Emory alum, I can assure you that Atlanta has many more global opportunities than just CDC (though sometimes it does feel a little like Rollins is an MPH mill for CDC!). Additionally, the school has a lot of funding and summer practicum opportunities. Take a look at GFE (global field experience) info on the website. Everyone in my cohort, both inside and outside the global health department, that wanted to get international experience did so and received financial assistance from the school. One of my friends from Emory now works at the NYC health department and another is at ICF in NY, so being all the way south won't hurt your connections terribly! Hopefully you can make it to Visit Emory (and whatever Columbia's equivalent is) since that should give you a feel for your cohort and some of the program offerings. Resources and colleagues should DEFINITELY factor into to your decision. I hope that helps. Good luck!
  3. I was admitted and almost enrolled. It's research, a good location, and the faculty member I was going to work with is quite dedicated. It was a tough decision saying no.
  4. No from GW, but I'd already said yes to UNC. Also got a yes from UIC.
  5. Thanks, that's helpful. I'm a little concerned about the whole college town thing, especially since I prefer city life and walkability. I have a car, though, so I'm more flexible in terms of location than just Carrboro. I wonder if I'll be surrounded by Duke fans if I live in Durham, though... Lol
  6. Yeah, actually! Interview this Thursday! Good luck!
  7. So since most of these posts are older, I figured I'd ask an updated question (especially since I'd like to know) - is Carrboro like the only place to live? And will I be neighbors with a bunch of undergrads doing teenage things?
  8. Got into UNC's Health Behavior PhD program!! I applied back in November for those still waiting to hear. I'm pretty much over the moon... Also as an FYI, I didn't get into several lower ranked schools last cycle. I was disheartened (ok devastated) but so glad it worked out this way! Fit is everything! Good luck everyone and may the odds be ever in your favor!
  9. Samesies! Another month to go maybe?
  10. For UIC? I did PhD. When I talked to one of the professors there, he said they offered funding on a case by case basis, but usually were able to find everyone. Same with UNC. Maybe it's a public school thing, but I noticed that private institutions seem more likely to mention funding up front? Has anyone else had a similar experience?
  11. Finally, someone else! I applied to UNC, GW (DrPH), and UIC. Based on previous years on gradcafe results for these schools, I still have like another torturous month to wait....
  12. This! I've also watched almost all of Netflix, read most of the library, taught myself how to knit, then crochet, and working to save up for the move (I hope I hope I hope I hope)
  13. Just got my MPH from Emory - departments make the final decisions. Admissions emails usually go out mid-to-late January from the department ADAPs. Good luck, Rollins was an amazing experience!!!
  14. I use Dropbox (highlighting and notes on the iPad with access on all other things) to store and an endnote/word combo for referencing. Had to do a couple of lit review for manuscripts, so I developed a table that has saved my life a bunch of times.
  15. Friday, 10am... Also, I think the snowstorm slowed them down a touch.
  16. Thanks. I did, and her response was that they've had soke scheduling issues but they were still really interested in interviewing me. She hoped to get back to me by the end of this week, but said follow up with her Monday if I didn't. The whole thing makes me want to curl up into the fetal position...
  17. So if you're like me, you're trying (desperately) to occupy your time with something, anything other than obsessing about the wait. I personally have started to obsess over Levenger notebooks for some reason: http://www.levenger.com/Circa-Notebooks-326.aspx What are you doing to make it through days?
  18. Behavioral and Community Health Sciences... If they ever actually schedule me... I'm turning into THAT person lol Def googled the lady that emailed me to make sure she was legit.
