  1. I don't get it. I just checked out my rating sheets and they both say "Excellent" or "Very Good". The only negative comment on either of the sheets is "However, the applicant is not as strong as other applicants overall".

  2. So is everyone moved in?

Any grad students buying a meal plan? I'm thinking about it, especially since my kitchen is pretty dirty and I don't have a dishwasher. I just don't want to be the only person eating alone. Is it possible to get the food to go so I can eat it at my apartment?

  3. My boss at my current job let me work part time from home when i go back to grad school.

I made my decision to go to stanford but i still haven't officially accepted the admission yet. i will probably do it over the weekend

yeah that's definitely a right decision. I just can't see myself passing up the opportunity to go to a very good program at a very prestige school.

btw from visitation day i heard that there are always very few numbers of phd applicants got accepted into each program, at least structural one is like that.. If i heard it correctly they say there is open spot only when a current phd student graduates. so this year there are like 7 new phd students or something?? not a lot.. it is definitely very competitive. I am not going to pursue a phd tho so i didn't confirm what he said. does that sound right?

Yeah, that sounds about right. But your odds of getting accepted to the PhD program as a Stanford master's student are much, much higher than from outside the school. The A/E director said they'll soon be hiring a new professor, so that will open up space for about 6 new PhD students.

I'm probably going to accept the offer this weekend too. I just filled out FAFSA, and since I worked full time last year, I don't know if I'll be eligible for any of the subsidized loans..

  4. That's exactly what i felt when I looked at the cost yesterday after finding out I am merely on the wait list for fellowships which means i have high chance not getting anything. I will have a part time job working professionally but even working 20hrs per week i still couldn't net up half the tuition that i need to pay. I came from a public university and received very nice financial aid so I didn't have to worry about money. I could never see myself going to a private school. but here i am looking at the numbers. kind of thinking private school is not for the poor like me who is also not competitive enough to get fellowship. I keep wondering how impressive the other guys are to receive funding

Do you already have a job lined up? Have you made your decision between schools yet?

It's going to be rough, but since I'll probably continue for a PhD, I think going to Stanford is probably the right decision.

  5. I'm starting to feel a little sick after looking more closely at all the expenses I will incur at Stanford. I know it's not a charity, but I find it hard to believe they don't have the resources for a couple extra assistantships or fellowships. I wish there was something I could do. A part time job won't even begin to scratch the surface of all the bills I'll be paying...

  6. Heh, I'm the same - currently a ME, going into CE, potentially at Stanford. No I didn't go to recruiting weekend, I only found out about my acceptance yesterday (I applied for no funding and so I was able to submit my app as late as March 17th lol).

I'm going to be visiting Stanford this weekend, do you have any recommendations of what I should check out? I would really appreciate it.

    P.S.

To: "lightyears, you're also currently a ME undergrad I'm guessing? I was wondering, have you looked at the prereqs that I'm guessing you haven't fulfilled yet before you can begin Stanford's structural engineering program? These are basic classes such as Design of Steel Structures, Design of Reinforced Concrete Structures, etc etc......I obviously haven't fulfilled those yet, as a ME undergrad, and thus these classes, along with some other prereqs, are really going to delay my time-to-graduate. I was wondering if you have the same problem?

Are you going to be meeting with any professors at Stanford this weekend? I guess I don't really have any suggestions on what you should check out. The Civil and Environmental building (Y2E2) is probably where you're going, right? Other than that, I just walked around the campus for a couple hours.

Where did you find the list of prereqs? I'm going into the A/E program and when I was at the recruiting weekend, it sounded like I'd be fine with the courses I took as a ME undergrad. Now that I think about it, out of all the students in A/E at the recruiting weekend, I don't think a single person had a civil or environmental undergrad degree.

Isn't the structures MS program only 45-units? Even if you add prereqs, there's no way it should take you 2 years and 2 quarters.

  7. I'm a mechanical engineer who will be going to Stanford for civil engineering next fall. Did you go to the recruiting weekend? I was really impressed with the place. I just don't understand why they don't have more funding opportunities...

  8. Nope, I didn't :(

I honestly didn't even know that UT was having one :?

It was a week ago. I called them up letting them know I was visiting and the graduate coordinator said if I wasn't going to the recruiting weekend, it would be best to just contact professors myself. I told him I hadn't heard about any recruiting weekend and he said it was only for the very best student since UT is covering all costs of the visit. But what really pissed me off was that I was in Austin the same two days as the recruiting weekend and they still didn't invite me to the events.

  9. Which on campus graduate housing would work best for a young, single guy? I've heard that EV is full of families and everyone pretty much keeps to themselves. I'm looking for something a little more social...

Also, anyone how are roomates selected?
