  1. Hi! This may be a really silly question but when I went to check the status of one of my applications, under decision the status changed to "Referred to college for review". Does anybody know what this means? Thank you for your time!
  2. Not to put down what anybody else here has said, but I talked to a Professor at a grad department last week who said that aren't all that concerned with GRE scores, and that if all other parts of the application are strong, a lower GRE score wouldn't hurt much. Again, every program is different.

    "New" GRE

The GRE is stressing me so much. My scores are definitely on the lower side, and I have taken them multiple times, I am just horrible at standardized tests. My other stats are good (3.7 GPA, independent research, TA and RA experience and awesome LOR's) but I feel like my GRE scores are going to prevent me from even being looked at! So stressful!
  4. I am sorry, I didn't mean to say that Florida State or Iowa are easy to gain admittance to, at all, I just meant that I wasn't applying to top 20 programs like most other people I notice on the board. My GRE scores were 157 on the Verbal and 152 on Quant. Nothing at all impressive about my GRE scores haha. I have studied for months but even in high school, I did horrible on standardized tests. I just really hope my lower GRE scores don't put me out of the running completely.
  5. I'm sorry for my ignorance if there has been another thread started regarding this topic, but I am new to the site and am just wondering about the GRE's. I have a pretty strong GPA (3.68) and experience as an Research Assistant, Teaching Assistant and have conducted my own research, which won several grants and awards, and was presented at the Easterns. However, I am HORRIBLE at standardized tests, and despite studying endlessly, my GRE scores are on the lower side and I was wondering what my chances would be at a less competitive doctoral program? I know the vast majority of people on this site are looking at top 20-30 schools, but would lower GRE scores completely off-set my chances of being admitted to a less competitive program? Thanks so much for any feedback, I am slightly freaking out haha. Btw, I am looking to apply to Florida State University, University of Iowa, and the University of Colorado at Boulder, just to name a few! Thanks again for any feedback!
  6. Also, excuse my ignorance, but when should I start contacting professors? And how exactly should I adress it? State that I have the same interest and ask what I can do to further qualify myself? Again, I'm sorry, I just have no idea! haha
  7. Thank you all SO much for all of the feedback! It really is greatly appreciated! And xdarthveganx, I unfortunately go to a smaller state school, which is not heavily focused on research! I am actually the first student from my college to ever even persue a graduate degree in Oneonta, that the faculty can remember! So, my research opportunities are a bit slimmer lol
  8. Thanks for the reply! Yes, my GPA has gone up every semester, but I haven't dropped below a 3.5 thus far in college, so it has only gone up minimally. I am totally open to applying to MA programs as well! I am just worried about being admitted after looking on the boards recently and noticing people who are far more qualified than I am getting rejected. So scary! lol
  9. Hey all! So I understand that this may an annoying thread, but I am slightly freaking out, and I couldn't really find any of the answers that I needed on any other thread. I was just wondering how competitive my stats would be? Unlike many other GradCafe users, I am not completely focused on getting into the most competitive programs, I am pretty much open to going anywhere! My GPA is a 3.68, I have done my own research, which was grant funded and IRB approved, which has been presented at two conferences thus far, one of which was the meeting of the ESS. I am also going to be a TA next semester, and have and will be presenting at numerous seminars regarding undergrad's involved in research. I am confident that my LOR's will be very strong, as I have close relationships with many professors in my schools department. I have also interned with an organization that works with homeless, at - risk, beaten and raped youth. I have not yet taken the GRE's, but I am no great standardized test taker. My areas of interest are Stratification, Demography, and Social Psychology. I know that this isn't enough information for an exact answer of whether or not I will be admitted anywhere, but I was just wondering how competitive I might be for admittance into a program?
  10. It seems to me that a lot of people take time off between their undergrad years before entering a Masters program. I'm a little worried because due to a financial situation, I don't really have the option of taking time off before grad school. How hard will it be for me to be accepted into a graduate school coming straight out of undergrad w/ these statistics? Keep in mind I will be applying to NYU, Colombia, Hunter, Adelphi an Fordham. GPA: 3.7 Major: Sociology Experience: Was President of my high schools Peer Mentors Program / 6 months and counting volunteering at a local nursing home/ Internship working with at-risk/ Runaway teenagers/ Currently helping to start an after school program at a local middle school for teenagers struggling in school / President of my fraternity / Worked as an Orientation leader for 3 years Research: With the help of a Professor, I have conducted by own study on the correlation between self-perceived social class and school bullying which I will be presenting at the Eastern Sociological Society Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
  11. Hello! I am currently an undergraduate student persuing a degree in Sociology, with plans to attend an MSW program after the completion of my degree. I have heard a lot from many different people about what to do and what to have to get into an MSW program, but very little about what it is actually like once you are enrolled. Any insight form current MSW students would be greatly appreciated! As a side note, I am applying to Fordham, Columbia and NYU, so if anybody from those schools can just talk about their experience thus far a little, that would be awesome! Thank you so much!
