  1. Well, I have given up my last chance to get in my dream school and wasted it with my own hand. Such a poor ending. I sent an email to the professor in UIUC stated that I will go to the Georgia Tech (since I promise). I feel really bad to do such a thing, because he even made call to my cell phone in order to convince me coming to the UIUC and even offered me to talk with the professor of the Georgia Tech if I change my decision. If there is no any chance to go UIUC at first, I will be happy to go to Georgia Tech, but now I will remember how I waste the my last chance every day I spent in Georgia Tech.
  2. Dear friends, My undergraduate degrees are in the field of ECE and I have been admitted to Georgia Tech Aerospace-Phd and committed the acceptance of their offer just 10 days ago. They even sent my I-20 documents yesterday. At that time, I got a rejection letter from UIUC ECE department which is one of my first choice. But a few days ago, a faculty of UIUC ECE department surprisingly sent me an email stated that he was interested in my application and he would offer me an RA position if I am still interested in coming to UIUC ECE. Now I am in a very bad dilemma about what to do. If I change my decision as not going to the Georgia Tech, this will cause a trouble for the professor in Georgia Tech and he has to find a new student, the most important thing, it was not ethical since I promised to come. But on the other hand, if I go to Georgia Tech Aerospace, I will give up the chance to go to my dream school UIUC-ECE by just sending an email myself. Both school offer me an RA position and all I want to do is researching on control science, both program have very well-known faculties. I hope to study on control of a (or a group of) ground vehicle in Georgia Tech and the other professor offers me a project related with distributed systems and control. Any advices will be appreciated
  3. Hi guys, I have read your posts on the decision board. I really do not know what happens at this year. I already have several acceptances from other well known universities, but there is no any financial aids. I , also, stated that I could not attend the program without financial aid, so there is no any difference between being rejected or accepted without financial aid for me. Luckily I have been offered a fellowship from OSU. Although I have strong academic records, I really don't know how I get it. Because this kind of awards are very competitive. In fact, I want to go to CMU or Gatech, but no luck I couldn't find any assistantship yet. I will try to find a way to get in those schools until 15th April and if I could manage it , I will not accept the fellowship offer. I am really sorry, I wish I could reject the fellowship offer earlier.
  4. Hi I have applied to UMich, Aero Phd, and havenot got any response yet.
  5. Hi folks, I think that we all will get a rejection from those schools which have not sent any email to us so far. Yesterday, I sent an email to a very well-known professor of UIUC, ECE who is a dear friend of my current advisor concerning the status of the my application to UIUC, ECE PhD. His reply is mainly as follows: In fact, we generally send rejection to the applicants between the end of March and middle of the April. If you have not got any email about your application so far, this means that no one in the department has not funding for you and I regret to inform you that you will get a rejection soon.
  6. Hi, I could not help for comparing the schools, but you can find salary statistics for CMU in the following link. http://www.studentaffairs.cmu.edu/Caree ... alary.html
  7. Hi folks, I have dual BS degrees in Electrical Engineering (specialized in Control Engineering) and Computer Engineering and am currently a master student in Information Technology program. Also, I have been a research assistant for more than 2 years in university laboratory researching on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Technology. I have applied to several phd programs for fall 20009 and have been admitted to Gatech Aerospace Engineering, PhD program. I have also applied both MS and PhD in Robotics of Carnegie Mellon University and hopefully been admitted to MS in Robotics program. There is no funding information for both programs yet, and I try to find a research assistanship to cover my expenses. But one of my relative has committed to gift- loan for MS in Robotics program of CMU. I am really in a trouble to decide which program to go. First of all, my final objective is to get a PhD degree preferably in a top institution in the field of Control Science (EECS or ECE program in one of MIT, Stanford, Berkeley, Gatech, UIUC or Caltech's Control and Dynamical System PhD program). Unfortunately, I got 98 scores from TOEFL IBT and therefore I could not even apply to MIT and Stanford and I already got rejection from Berkeley EECS- PhD, Gateh ECE-PhD. I do not hope to get good news from both UIUC and Caltech. I think that these two acceptances will remain my best choices. I have two options: 1) Get the loan and go to CMU for MS in Robotics program. Get a higher score in TOEFL IBT or waiver because of being a student in a US institution for two years. Study hard and get some research published, gather well references from well known professors and reapply those top schools with better qualifications 2 years later (double BS degrees, double MS degrees, but get behind back 2 years of your peers ) 2) Try to find an assistantship in Gatech and go to Aerospace phd program. Take extra undergraduate classes in order to learn basics of Aerospace Engineering (flight mechanics, guidance and navigation). As far as I know , there are also well known faculties studying in Control Science (Eric Feron, Jeff Shamma, Magnus Egerstedt). Try to research under supervision of one of them and hope to study in those top schools for a postdoc. I really do not know what to do ? giving up from my dreams and directly going to a phd program related with control but completely different my undergradute degrees or going for a second master degree and pursue my dreams again. Probably, taking a second master degree in CMU will cost 100K $ (but i may find an assistanship from beginning of second semester) and spending two more years( I am currenty 24 years old). Does the Carnegie Mellon, Robotics worth for all and will it increase my chance to get those top schools in your opinions? I know that it is a top school in Computer Science but how about in Robotics?
  8. I am also waiting the application result and have applied the control track. Hope to get a chance to work under supervision of Prof Francesco Bullo.
  9. Thanks for your kind reply. I am already aware of what research is and will do my best during my education.
  10. Hi folks, I am currently a MS student in a good engineering school in my country and also have double BS degrees in Computer and Electrical Engineering from the same school. I applied for both MS and PhD in Robotics of Carnegie Mellon University in order to increase my chance to get admitted for Fall 2009. Luckily, I have been admitted to MS in Robotics program, but rejected for PhD in Robotics. In fact, my final goal is study to on control, develop autonomous system and to get a PhD in Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) or Electrical Engineering&Computer Science (EECS) from a top engineering university (MIT, Stanford, UC Berkeley, UIUC, Caltech, CMU), but I do not any hope that I could achieve that at this time. Therefore, since CMU is a very well-known university in robotics, I seriously consider getting a second MS degree in robotics and then reapplying those program with better qualifications and records one or two year later. However, I am not sure that this is a good way and hope to get some help to make every thing clearer. 1) Is this program a good step for a future PhD and academic career based on its curriculum and is it an academical or professional MS program and different from any other MS programs in other universities ? http://www.ri.cmu.edu/ri_static_content ... enu_id=322 2) Although I know that admission process of the top engineering schools are very competitive and they make decision based on several criteria (research experience, skills, GPA, references, publications etc. ), will getting a MS degree in robotics from CMU increase my chance to get a PhD in top schools? Is the MS in Robotics program as good as MS programs in ECE, EECS of MIT, Stanford..? Thanks in advance
