That is correct, if I were a musicology applicant I would not directly work with Taruskin or any of the other musicologists, of course. Remember that there are musicology applicants here as well.

If you were a musicology applicant and were admitted, you would work with the musicology faculty...

I got the impression that the person who said that Berkeley "isn't what it used to be" because of Taruskin's retirement was a comp applicant.  Sorry if that wasn't the case.  Berkeley musicology is solid, despite Taruskin's retirement.  Changed, but still solid as hell.

Had an email from UPenn this afternoon inviting me for a ten-minute Skype interview. Anyone have any ideas what this might entail? As I said a few posts further up, I wasn't aware when I applied that any of my schools did interviews, so it's caught me a little off guard!

(Also, best of luck to everyone who's waiting, and congrats to those who've been accepted/waitlisted so far – it seems like decisions have been coming thick and fast this week...)

Hey there -- I did a Skype interview for Penn a few years back.  It was pretty chill.  Each prof asked a question (maybe 4 in total) about the work I'd submitted, my interests, why I wanted to go to Penn, what I'd been up to lately.  It was fun! :) Try not to worry.

  3. Any advice for turning down offers? Particularly with a university with which you have been corresponding?

It came down to school A and B and I've been emailing back and forth with both, but decided on school A. I don't want it to seem like I was simply "leading them on," especially since I'd still like to work with one professor in the future (they're in my subfield).

    Hi everyone,

I'm in a similar situation. I've decided to accept the offer from a specific school, but I don't want to be rude with the other professors, especially since one of them is very important in my area.

Here's what I ended up doing:

--Thanked them for the honor of admission

--Told them how much respect I have for their faculty/dept, and said how much I would have surely learned as a graduate student there

--Said that, after much deliberation, I chose X school

--Said that I hope we can stay in touch and I look forward to future contact with the fabulous students/faculty at their school

Sent this type of note (individually, not a mass email) to all of the faculty I met at each school I visited/was admitted to.

  4. I contacted Princeton to inquire about my status on the wait list and received a reply saying that the people on the wait list are not in any particular order. What is that about? Is their wait list really just a formality, since no one ever declines their offer?

They probably assess the wait-list as spots open; people do turn down Princeton.  Someone in my current program did.

  5. Ugh same I haven't heard anything....

Also I'm sort of desperately waiting to hear from SUNY Stony Brook about their History/Theory Master's. I feel like I have a great shot of getting in and on their website they mention that results come out in mid-February... but I haven't heard anything yet. Have any of you guys seen or heard anything? Nothing music-related from Stony Brook has popped up from 2015 on the results list so far.

Has anyone heard from Columbia yet (any program)? It's the last school for me and the wait is killing me...

The year I applied, Columbia was pretty late in contacting people, so don't give up hope!

  6. Eastman, Indiana, Stanford, and University of Michigan. Waiting on results from all four--three were Skype--but I am not the one who got the acceptance to Stanford, unfortunately. Congrats to that person though!

Interesting -- Stanford never used to do interviews... Good luck!! :-)

  7. Thanks for the replies.. the problem is not because I had to look up so many words. Time is not issue in this exam--I would be able to look up every single word and still have time left. I have no problem reading an everyday news article in German, though I have to look up a few words. I think that I'm not used to music vocabularies. It's easy to say "practice" it, but these were words that I don't even know after looking up in the dictionary. Anyhow, I got more practice done on JSTOR, I like their German and French article search. Some articles have both English+Ger/Fre to check my translation is correct.

After spending quite some time on JSTOR, I'm pretty sure that my French reading comprehension is much, much better than German, even though my German is better in speaking. I grew up taking French in K-12, as I'm Canadian, but that was a long time ago, and I thought I forgot everything. I assumed that my German was better than my French.. Maybe I was wrong. Opting for French exam next... Feeling good about it.

Cool. You should give the French exam a try! :)

  8. As some other people have suggested, try doing lots of past exams (and time yourself when you do them) so you can try to get as fast as possible at this skill.  Best case scenario is that you have time left over at the end of the exam and can check over your translation.  Quiz yourself on vocab so you don't have to look up as many words and try reading an article -- even a news article -- everyday for practice.

  9. Berkeley typically does not interview for ethnomusicology, nor I believe for historical musicology for that matter. Good luck to you and everyone else applying this season!

That's right -- Berkeley doesn't interview.  Another one that does interview is Columbia.

  10.

Does anyone know which universities interview? Regarding my applications, as far as I know, Michigan and Penn are the only ones that interview. I'm right?

Anyway, what should I expect from an interview?

If the past is any indication, Penn will interview.

  11. Hi everyone!

I am currently finishing my MA at UConn and in the process of applying for Ph.D programs. After settling to the universities where I was going to apply, I am struggling with doubts about one of them - Stony Brook. They openly say in the online application to my program that they are not accepting applications for most programs in the department because of funding. Then, the submission of the materials has proven very troubling: they do not accept digital files of your transcripts, for example. You have to send the hard copy to them. All of this has made me think if SB is a good option. Does anyone know how things work in the Music department?

    Thanks.

Hmm... Don't know much about Stony Brook, but the lack of funding sounds worrisome.  If you apply there, you should be prepared for the possibility of not getting funding (hopefully that won't happen though!).  Are you applying to other programs that do guarantee funding?
