  1. I agree with you from a rational point of view, but when I am in a frantic anticipatory mode I tend not to be that levelheaded.
  2. Whoever posted that Berkeley admission got my heart racing like crazy. Congrats on the admission, but I'm fearing mine will be a rejection if I haven't heard yet.
  3. Hearty congrats to all those that got in, and especially to a lurker-friend for getting into his top choice (UMich)!
  4. Sorry Brent, see my editing of the post. Didn't mean for the post to have an insulting/accusatory ring to it. Sorry to hear you didn't get in, but your stats should put you in good stead at most places.
  5. UMich just rejected someone with phenomenal statistics. I know this person might have had a shoddy letter and references - and I didn't even apply to this uni - but I feel increased pressure. Edit: obviously I don't mean to offend this person; all I am saying is that if even those with near-perfect stats in terms of GRE and GPA need to worry, everyone else should positively be shaking in their boots.
  6. The former. I'm not necessarily worried, but I would rather minimize the chance of it happening by refraining from posting.
  7. I might be overly paranoid, but I am surprised at people disclosing their intended research focus as well as the subject of their written sample(s) so freely here. I would rather not be easily identifiable, even if I don't think posting on a message board is exactly going to be frowned upon (aside from its likely correlation with propensity to procrastinate online, ha). I'll be sure to share them in a few weeks' time though, when my rejections have come in so that they can serve as a cautionary tale for future applicants. Anyways, a new week of waiting has commenced. Judging from last year I shouldn't expect to hear back this week, but oh well. Fortunately I am on a week-long research trip, which should help to take my mind of things (although it's doing a poor job at this very moment).
  8. I would venture that knowledge about lunar policy is negatively correlated with making promises to set up lunar missions, so perhaps your chances for Republican candidacy aren't as bleak as you might think.
  9. If it's any consolation, my first ones appeared a few years ago but have defied multiplication. Looks like my graying is bound to go in fits and starts.
  10. Yes, when I was speaking about the critique of hipsterhood that is exactly what I meant: the characters have no depth, so you cannot identify with them. But I think it's symbolic of the appearance-obsessed vacuity of hipsters. I really doubt Dolan directed it like that on purpose, but I still think it's great.
  11. Les Amours Imaginaires, or Heartbeats in English. A brilliant, perhaps unwittingly so, critique of hipsterhood featuring the luscious Xavier Dolan and one of the best soundtracks ever.
  12. I went to a screening that was followed by a Q&A with the director and the main actress (who can't act if her life depended on it). The girl was jetlagged and couldn't stop laughing at everything. The only thing more embarrassing than her presence were the questions that the students asked.
  13. I found a US coin (I'm not in the US). I consider it good luck.
  14. The trailer looks Oscar-worthy compared to the Razzie-level quality of the full film.
  15. Don't watch the phdcomics movie though; time might actually be better spent worrying about applications.
  16. The Kaplan book has the "Official Kaplan" method for everything, which is hilarious. It's like trademarking common sense. But I think their books are a helpful preparation.
  17. Good to see acceptances trickling in. These two-three months are excruciating :/
  18. If last year is any indication, early to mid-February for all three. Fingers crossed!
  19. The same here. I don't mind the delay; I was more worried that I had actually omitted something, thereby risking voiding my application.
  20. I'm in a similar position and really don't know what would constitute good practice. Congratulations in any case, especially on the Electoral Studies paper. No small feat.
  21. A possible interpretation would be that the 'Received date' indicates whether electronic receipt of these documents has been registered (i.e. an automated process), whereas the GAO Received Date could indicate whether the admissions office has actually opened your application folder. Not really sure what else it could mean. But if it's any consolation, my screen is exactly like yours.
  22. FYI while people at QEH are overall very happy with their course and department, people at the DPIR are generally dissatisfied. You should only seriously consider the Comp Gov. MPhil if you have a background in the field and are mainly interested in methodology, because not much time will be allocated to substantive work on comparative politics.
