  1. Just wanted to give another big shout out to litjust for starting this thread. It's been a wild ride, and I'm thankful to have had some companions along the way. Best of luck to everyone! If you want to keep in touch professionally via LinkedIn, please PM me. It's not to early to start building our networks!

Thanks, wildviolet! It definitely has been wonderful talking with all of you for the past few months. Whoa, I just realized it has nearly been half a year!!! I will send you a PM.

  2. Yep, I'll be there that Friday/Saturday! I grew up in WI, so I'm pretty familiar with Madison, but I want to check out some of the neighborhoods recommended for grad students, since all I really know of the city is partying with undergrads. I've heard you need to start looking crazy early. Are you in Curriculum & Instruction?

Yes, I'm in C&I. Are you as well?

  3. @litjust, I don't know I read this read for this whole cycle and somehow missed that you decided on Madison! I feel like I haven't heard people talk about Wisconsin at all on these boards, but it *might* be my top choice. I'm heading out there for a visit in a couple weeks (unfortunately during spring break, but I mostly just want my partner to get a feel for the city).

@wildviolet Did you decide to visit UW?

Hey Pourtant!! We might be out there during the same time (I'll be there from 4/5 - 4/8). I'm going to try and find a place to live next year. I went in December and loved it!

  4. Thanks for this. Ugh, you're right. I should visit UW, too...

Yeah, I agree with a few other people and I think you should visit also. I visited Madison in December (before I was accepted) and I'm glad I did because they also did not offer money for a campus visit, although I have received a fellowship for the program. I'm glad I went because during my visit, it immediately became my top choice. I fell in love with the program and the city in a way that I couldn't have simply by reading about it and communicating with people electronically. I wonder if there is a way for you to get a cheaper ticket. Maybe you can name your own price on Priceline? I've had tremendous success with this for hotels and rental cars, but I've never tried for a flight. It might be worth investigating.

  5. As a 2nd year teacher, a representative from UofM came to observe my classroom today. Afterwards, he asked me what my plans were for the following year. Upon telling him I was going to do my doctorates at USC, he responded with a "Oh, you know, that's funny. I recently saw a list of the top 10 Education programs, on no, I meant top 20 programs, UC Berkeley and UCLA were on there, and of course Michigan was there too, but USC wasn't on the list."

    My mental thought process:

    A. What list were you looking at again?

    B. Check the list again.

He then left my classroom saying "Have fun in grad school! Well, not so much fun with all the loans you'll have to take out."

My immediate response: "Oh, I have an incredible financial package, free ride to college and an amazing stipend. So yes, I will have tons of fun in grad school." (Cue double fist pump in the air!)

He left my classroom thinking I'm nuts. Heh... =.=''

I think a lot of people are just unaware of how grad school funding works. But he does sound like he was trying to be an intentional downer. Jealous, maybe? You'll have a BLAST in grad school B)

  6. Hey!

I'll be coming to Madison in the fall from the southeast (although I am originally from California). I am also nervous about finding a place, especially since I don't know the area. I am not sure how soon I should start looking for a place.

  7. Just admitted to Stanford's MA in POLS! :)

    Congrats!! :D

lol! Thanks :) I figured it was time to put up a pic.

I can't believe we've made it this far! It's almost over. I'm so impressed by all of you and share your happiness (and frustrations..lol).

Just have to say that you all are the bee's knees. <3

You're so sweet!! I love communicating with everyone on here too!!

HGSE e-mailed asking me to check the page. Blegh.

Hitomimay, well USC is all yours!! I'm excited for you :D

  8. Hitomimay, I'm glad you're opting for the PhD!

Wildviolet, I'm only adding this since we've been accepted to the same program, Michigan State's overall ranking is lower, but for our field (Curriculum and Instruction) they're ranked number 2. I have to keep remembering this myself, especially when it's so easy to get caught up in the overall rankings of top tier R1 institutions. Andsowego, I agree! I just want to be at a place that has a rep in my field and scholars doing work in my research area. ZeChoc, I think you've given perfect advice.
