  1. Oh, I'm glad to hear this! If it's really not a mistake, then I'm going to cheer for the both of us. I really do hope more information is forthcoming...
  2. I have no idea what's going on with Indiana because I just received an e-vite to the PhD open house on 3/22. Except I have heard nothing from them since the department secretary told me my application was complete. I'm a bit confused, but I'm guessing I was admitted off a waitlist that I didn't know about... (either that, or I got the invitation by mistake)
  3. Thanks! It did turn out to be good news--I was accepted to the MA program. Since I am horribly awkward on the phone, the conversation was pretty minimal. Offers will go out by end of next week (I think) with a decision deadline of April 1st. She did first ask me if I was still interested in the program, though.
  4. If they're going to go through the trouble, they might as well hire George Clooney.
  5. That sounds terrifying. And beyond awkward. Speaking of, I got a voice message from UofT while I was driving. Now I'm waiting for her to call back...
  6. Just checked my offer letter again, and unfortunately, no word on the number of applicants. I do hope you hear from them soon, though!
  7. Thanks! I applied for the terminal MA only, and I applied as a Victorianist. It totally escaped my mind to ask about the current state of notifications--apologies! (Between getting into grad school and now getting a FT job offer for a job I applied to before getting into schools, my head's seriously been all over the place.) I do recall seeing a PhD acceptance on the results survey from maybe last week?
  8. If you're referring to the MA acceptance, that was me! I'll likely be turning it down, though.
  9. I frequently have issues with this, especially since I've been working outside of academia for a couple of years and have gotten used to addressing everyone by first name. The associate DGS at one school signed emails with her first name, so that's how I initially addressed her. But after awhile I felt horribly guilty/disrespectful about it and switched to using "Professor Last Name" in subsequent emails. I'm sure professors have better things to do than to sit and judge future grad students based on this, but I seriously hope she didn't notice.
  10. Thanks for making this thread! I will be attending the open house on March 15th. I've heard negative things from professors about CUNY's funding issues and how the average length to PhD is much longer than at other schools due to the teaching load, but with this new funding initiative, I imagine the financial situation won't be so stressful. Also, I'd love to get more information about the placement record. A brief look at the CUNY English department website suggests that a large number of graduates end up at positions within the CUNY system, which doesn't surprise me. Is there a robust placement program with real effort to place graduates elsewhere? Finally, I'm really curious to learn more about the grad student community. I did my undergrad in NYC, so I have a feel for what it's like to live and study there, but I know being at CUNY will be very different. I'm, frankly, a little intimidated by the size of the system and am concerned that the graduate experience will be very isolating. So I would love to hear from current grad students.
  11. I know it's still early, but this process is seriously prolonged torture. I'm assuming a rejection from NYU, but without that official rejection letter, it's very hard for me to let go. Sigh. Anyone have any idea if NYU does waitlists (apologies if this has already been addressed elsewhere)? I feel awful for being so distracted at work, but this is seriously all I can think about.
  12. Best of luck! Congrats to everyone on the Buffalo and Chicago acceptances...and much luck to everyone else waiting to hear from schools! Hang in there! [This was actually the first school I've received news from (with implied rejections from NYU and Indiana).] About five minutes after the admissions site-generated email notification, I received a very nice email from Nancy Armstrong. She also informed me of a fellowship nomination. So I think my permanent expression is one of disbelief/deer in headlights. I'm the worst employee today.
  13. Thanks, both for the congrats and the clarification!
  14. Hi everyone, I haven't participated much in this thread, but I just got an email saying my Duke decision was ready. Apparently, I got a funded offer.... But I didn't interview at all. This is a mistake, right? (My hands are shaking as I type.)l Edit: This is the English PhD.
