I have no idea what's going on with Indiana because I just received an e-vite to the PhD open house on 3/22. Except I have heard nothing from them since the department secretary told me my application was complete. I'm a bit confused, but I'm guessing I was admitted off a waitlist that I didn't know about... (either that, or I got the invitation by mistake)

Acceptance Freakout Thread

Thanks! It did turn out to be good news--I was accepted to the MA program. Since I am horribly awkward on the phone, the conversation was pretty minimal. Offers will go out by end of next week (I think) with a decision deadline of April 1st. She did first ask me if I was still interested in the program, though. -

If they're going to go through the trouble, they might as well hire George Clooney. -

That sounds terrifying. And beyond awkward. Speaking of, I got a voice message from UofT while I was driving. Now I'm waiting for her to call back... -

Just checked my offer letter again, and unfortunately, no word on the number of applicants. I do hope you hear from them soon, though! -

Thanks! I applied for the terminal MA only, and I applied as a Victorianist. It totally escaped my mind to ask about the current state of notifications--apologies! (Between getting into grad school and now getting a FT job offer for a job I applied to before getting into schools, my head's seriously been all over the place.) I do recall seeing a PhD acceptance on the results survey from maybe last week? -

If you're referring to the MA acceptance, that was me! I'll likely be turning it down, though. -
Fall 2013 English Lit Applicants

I frequently have issues with this, especially since I've been working outside of academia for a couple of years and have gotten used to addressing everyone by first name. The associate DGS at one school signed emails with her first name, so that's how I initially addressed her. But after awhile I felt horribly guilty/disrespectful about it and switched to using "Professor Last Name" in subsequent emails. I'm sure professors have better things to do than to sit and judge future grad students based on this, but I seriously hope she didn't notice. -
Thanks for making this thread! I will be attending the open house on March 15th. I've heard negative things from professors about CUNY's funding issues and how the average length to PhD is much longer than at other schools due to the teaching load, but with this new funding initiative, I imagine the financial situation won't be so stressful. Also, I'd love to get more information about the placement record. A brief look at the CUNY English department website suggests that a large number of graduates end up at positions within the CUNY system, which doesn't surprise me. Is there a robust placement program with real effort to place graduates elsewhere? Finally, I'm really curious to learn more about the grad student community. I did my undergrad in NYC, so I have a feel for what it's like to live and study there, but I know being at CUNY will be very different. I'm, frankly, a little intimidated by the size of the system and am concerned that the graduate experience will be very isolating. So I would love to hear from current grad students.

0% Confidence of Acceptance
joy illimited replied to TripWillis's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I know it's still early, but this process is seriously prolonged torture. I'm assuming a rejection from NYU, but without that official rejection letter, it's very hard for me to let go. Sigh. Anyone have any idea if NYU does waitlists (apologies if this has already been addressed elsewhere)? I feel awful for being so distracted at work, but this is seriously all I can think about. -

Best of luck! Congrats to everyone on the Buffalo and Chicago acceptances...and much luck to everyone else waiting to hear from schools! Hang in there! [This was actually the first school I've received news from (with implied rejections from NYU and Indiana).] About five minutes after the admissions site-generated email notification, I received a very nice email from Nancy Armstrong. She also informed me of a fellowship nomination. So I think my permanent expression is one of disbelief/deer in headlights. I'm the worst employee today. -

Hi everyone, I haven't participated much in this thread, but I just got an email saying my Duke decision was ready. Apparently, I got a funded offer.... But I didn't interview at all. This is a mistake, right? (My hands are shaking as I type.)l Edit: This is the English PhD. -
Program Specific Questions - Fall 2013
joy illimited replied to bfat's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I'm not sure if this was ever clarified, but I'm getting the same message... And I did (mistakenly) send my official transcript to the admissions office back at the beginning of November. The Rutgers English admissions website says this: "The deadline for applying to the Graduate Program each year is December 15th. Graduate School catalogues are available on-line:catalogs.rutgers.edu. In addition to the completed application, applicants are required to submit electronically: All relevant (undergraduate and graduate) academic transcripts. If admitted into the program, applicant will be required to submit (2) sets of original transcripts for all relevant schools attended" To me that sounds like they expect us to upload only unofficial transcripts at this point and provide official transcripts if we're admitted. But then the general graduate admissions page has the following guidelines: While programs may require additional materials, here are the basic application requirements: Online application $65 nonrefundable application fee One official transcript from each post-secondary institution attended Three letters of recommendation A personal statement Current test results, as required by the program Supporting materials, as required by the program -
I know this topic is a year old at this point, but CUNY does not seem to have improved in the past year. I emailed admissions for clarification but am also hoping to get a quicker answer here. My understanding is that we need to mail in the following: -writing sample -CV/resume -official transcript -signature page -$125 check It seems like there's a place to write your SOP in the online application (an annoyingly tiny window), and that seems like a departure from last year's application. Am I missing anything? My recommenders submitted their letters online, although it's quite frustrating that you can't check whether they've been received. CUNY has the worst application I've encountered so far.

just mailed my first app -- tears ensued

Submitted NYU's at 11:55 last night, huge sigh of relief. At work right now... We didn't have to submit any separate application (FAFSA) for financial aid, right? I remember some of my schools want you to submit a FAFSA, but I don't remember reading anything about that on the NYU site... I was so happy to be done last night, but as 5 pm approaches, I keep on wondering if I left anything out. And now I'm surreptitiously checking things on my phone while at work. OH GOD. -
Fall 2013 English Lit Applicants
joy illimited replied to harvardlonghorn's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I actually emailed a couple of schools (CUNY Graduate Center and Fordham) about it, and they both said it wouldn't be a problem, although Fordham suggested sending a follow-up email once I submit my application. This has calmed my fears somewhat, since I figure these schools have been doing this for ages and surely they must have a reliable system in place. I'm mainly worried about schools with somewhat vague and/or unhelpful application instructions, since I don't know if that's a general indication of their admissions organization (or lack thereof). I'm definitely not liking how large a chunk of time logistical considerations are playing in this application process. -

Datatape, I can sympathize with starting out with good intentions and then letting them fall by the wayside. I'm working FT as well, and I had such high hopes of working on my PS and writing samples (and reading lots and lots of criticism) over the summer. And here I am, doing things very last minute! I'm hoping that the looming deadlines and my general paranoia will compell me to finalize things in the next 2-3 weeks so that I can submit applications with some breathing room left. Speaking of paranoia, is anyone else worried about submitting GRE score reports and transcripts before submitting the actual applications themselves? I have a fairly common name, so I'm terrified that should those items arrive first, they won't be matched up to the rest of my application. Finally, I am going to echo proflorax's sentiments about the different requirements for supplementary materials. They're driving me bonkers, especially the various writing sample lengths.
