  1. So is the consensus that results will be posted before e-mails are sent out?

There was about a 20 minute delay for me personally between when I found outon the site, and received an e-mail. The e-mail came later.

  2. Do you think who your adviser is plays an important role in the decision making process?

I don't know that it's an "important" part, but certainly the reviewers want to see applicants working with advisers relevant to their fields of study. I also can't see it hurting to have a well known scholar in your field as your adviser. Just my two cents.

  3. They ranked all of us in January, so they already made the decisions...

That's not entirely true. Part of the hold-up this year is that the meetings for the application reviewers were canceled in February due to a snow storm, and were rescheduled for March. I'm not saying that is justification for the amount of time they make us wait, but it's a factor.

  4. I agree with Hekog. No mundane detail like that is going to make or break an application. Most of that personal information is strictly for demographic profiling anyways. So, sit back, relax as much as possible while we all wait to hear the news. Cheers. Good luck.

  5. For those of you who read last year's thread, do you remember the guy who got all the awardee names before NSF posted to the website? Did he figure out the "excel export" thing or was it more sophisticated than that?

I really don't know what they were doing last year. It was some kind of weird hacker crap that I did not want to involve myself with. In the end they got their rating sheets like 2 days early. No one ever got the actual awardee list early I'm fairly sure. So... I'm just going to wait it out like everyone else. I have a good feeling that by tomorrow afternoon I'll get an e-mail from the National Science Foundation.

  6. I would bet that your GRE scores really don't matter if your proposal and essays are well done. They are really rewarding the fellowship based on potential as a graduate student (they're not even really rewarding this particular project; as we all know, you don't even have to carry out the one in your proposal). The GRE doesn't really tell you much about a student's potential to think about and do science (or related work), just how well you can take a standardized test.

I couldn't have said it better. I think you're exactly right.

  7. I don't know where you all get your ideas about GRE scores. Average GRE scores each year are reported at about a 460 Verbal and 570 quantitative. So, anything above a 1030 is above average. I know a young woman who received the award last year with a GRE score of 1120, which she submitted to them. A 1200 is a very good GRE score, that anyone should be proud of attaining. Over 1300 is statistically phenomenal. So, get back to reality and remember that we'll all smart people. I reiterate the fact that GRE scores count for very little in this program. I hope this makes some people feel better. Cheers.

  8. So.... where do I find this link to posted review sheets that everyone is talking about? I'm not seeing a place for it anywhere on the "Manage My Application" page.

You have to go to www.nsfgrfp.org, and at the bottom of that page there is a link to "view application rating sheets". It's not within fastlane.

  9. ...Not to increase anyone's heart rate...but I just checked to see if ratings sheets were posted. The site is down (Page not found: 404), which means that NSF is probably in the process of uploading everything.

And not to decrease anyone's heart rate, but that has been that way for a few weeks now.

  10. Actually, I think last year both rounds were posted around 2am after the site temporarily went down for "maintenance".

That's absolutely correct. So, honestly, it could happen at any time. Lord knows why we all thought we would wait till 2:00am last year, but there was plenty of us who did, and posted the results to this site straight away. But, as was stated, it's officially "early April", so where's my friggin' notification already?

  11. So it has begun. Last night I had, albeit about two weeks later than last year, my first dream about the award notifications. Unfortunately, I didn't get the chance to see if I received one. The list was posted, but I couldn't get to the right page of the list in time. I woke up, promptly to realize that I don't have ESP. Oh well...

  12. Damnit... I just now realized that in my freakin' title I used "Affect" when I meant "Effect". Everything else looks spotless, so here's hoping no one else notices... three advisors didn't. As far as references, I had 7 in my research plan, and 5 in my previous research essay. Cheers.

  13. April cannot come soon enough!!

Just a question for you guys... if I took my GREs in August 2005 (did my master's, worked for a bit, now going back to school in the fall) and I wanted to apply for this fellowship or the NDSEG or whatever else NEXT fall, would I need to take my GREs again?? They would expire in August 2010, right? Is there any way around taking them again, if I wanted to apply for these fellowships?

    thanks for all your help!

I know little about the NDSEG, but with the NSF GRFP, I am fairly certain that you can't apply if you already have your MA. Sorry.

  14. I don't know... I tend to think the official site, which says "early April", is a little more reliable than a Facebook group. I'm still holding out for April 2nd. If I'm wrong, so be it. We wait.

  15. This is my second year applying. I've been following this blog religiously, just as I did last year, and I've decided to speak up finally. Last year was certainly a nightmare, but I'm optimistic still, as none of the other outrageous delays are applicable now. I'll throw my money down on Friday April 2nd. Best of luck to everyone else in funding limbo. Cheers.

  16. Well, perhaps, like the awards, the e-mails are being sent out in "installments based on discipline". So... we all just have to wait it out still unless we're on the list or have an e-mail. Which is not me... *sigh*

Nevermind, just got the "We regret to inform you that you were not selected to receive a fellowship in this year's competition." Congrats to the winners and to the rest of us... *big hug*

  18. Yeah, I'm thinking that this maintenance means nothing because it shuts down the entirety of fastlane - not just the GRFP site. Why would they shut the entire site down just to post results on one part of the site? I think we're reading too much into it.

  19. Will you travel the world to ancient cultural sites setting up tents and digging up large craters? That seems very adventurous!

Yup. But, not too ancient. I work with Medieval Ireland.
