Program Specific Questions - Fall 2013
asleepawake replied to bfat's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I just called and everyone is on vacation. I guess it's too late if it didn't go through anyway, so I might as well wait... -

My receipt doesn't say anything about submitting the app. It's just a small receipt. Now I'm worried I never hit the last button to submit it... -

Hey, Buffalo applicants - did you ever receive an e-mail confirming that your application had been submitted? I don't seem to have one. All I can find is a receipt for the $75 fee, an e-mail from when my application was started, and e-mails stating that my LORs have been submitted (and I can only find 2 of these, though Interfolio assures me 3 were sent). I hope I'm not the only one missing this confirmation... ? -
I think the person who writes the thesis has a better chance, if only because writing a thesis gives you more practice writing scholarship and gives you something really polished to use as your writing sample. I imagine this is more important than how it looks to have simply completed a thesis. At the same time, someone who wrote a thesis that was poorly written or had no interesting argument is going to lose to somebody who didn't write one but who has a great seminar paper with an original and interesting argument.

Ok, so I officially have so much to do that I can't do any of it. Instead, I've wasted my time doing this. At that link is a list with all/most programs and the first day they notified last year. This basic idea was stolen from something that was done for MFA programs when I applied to those a few years ago. I found it helpful and it meant I didn't have to constantly search the results board. Clearly, it's not at all done, but feel free to add to it. I'll continue to update as I get bored. Benefit from the the fruits of my anxiety.

For all applicants? Jeez! Loss of Americans don't even have passports! Are you sure it isn't marked for international applicants only? -
How Bad is an A-?
asleepawake replied to DontHate's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I was lucky enough to attend an MFA program that was pretty lit-heavy. That helped me to realize quickly that although I continue to enjoy writing creative work, I do not want it to be the focus of my scholarship. If you attended an MFA that was studio-based, it must be jarring to suddenly have these kinds of classes as a PhD student. However, keep in mind that it is your first semester, and, honestly, most of the jobs available to you will involve teaching creative writing and craft, so you will hopefully not suffer too much if your seminar grades are not up to par with your workshop grades. At the same time, you'll be expected to be well-rounded. Do you feel you learned enough from this class that you can move beyond the B, or do you feel at a loss for what you missed? -
Ghostwriting SOP
asleepawake replied to HeatherC's topic in Statement of Purpose, Personal History, Diversity
Let's call it what is it: plagiarism. This is not "ghostwriting." You are not Hilary Duff penning a novel. You are an academic writing a statement about what kind of work you're going to do. It is requirement in any and all academic institutes that you complete your own work. Write it yourself. Go over it with someone who is a strong writer. Proofread it with them. But it absolutely needs to be your work, or you should not be anywhere near a University. I'm not trying to be harsh, but this is serious. You should pass this information along to anyone you have heard discussing this option. -

Yes yes yes. It seems to not have been done much, though fat studies/body studies is happening. Is it possible to be too close to something to write about it academically? With this one, I just might be. -
You guys! The very wonderful edx.org (free online classes offered through Harvard and MIT) is offering some awesome courses for the spring. I want to take everything. I am definitely enrolling in "Justice" and maybe "The Ancient Greek Hero," because I'm lacking in that area. Anybody else? I really don't have time for this but WANT.
