  1. How is everyone paying for their programs (especially for those that are attending the pricier schools)? Parents? Savings? Loans? Their first child?

Loans  I was awarded an assistantship which greatly reduces the tuition at the university I'm attending, but I'll still have to take out loans to cover everything (it's a private university). Honestly though, it's worth it to me because I feel like the school is a perfect fit, much more so than any other school I applied to. I've kind of resigned myself to the fact that I'll be in debt for a long while (considering the fact that my undergrad was ALSO a private college, although generous with scholarships. Sigh).

  2. Ive considered taking some lines from an admissions rejection email i've received and using them when I email schools to tell them I will not be going there.

    Something like:

Thank you for your interest in me for your graduate program at -. I have given it careful consideration but regret to inform you that I will not be accepting your offer of admission. I realize this news may be disappointing to you, but I received offers from an unusually large number of well qualified schools and ultimately can only accept one. You will receive official notification by regular postal service.

    Haha, perfect!

  3. Wow so... I heard from my last school I was waiting for today. It's over! I've made my decision, and will be declining quite a few acceptances and taking myself off the waitlist of quite a few schools as well. Now I guess I can stop checking my email obsessively and bugging my mom about if she has checked the mail yet. Weird. Very, very weird.

Hope all you guys got/will be getting the news you were hoping for!

  4. Today is the decision day (with $500 deposit due) that the University of South Carolina gave on the acceptance letter. Just curious of all who got accepted to USC-Columbia, how many are planning to attend? How many got some type of funding?

Still waiting on a few schools, waitlisted on one. Very hard decision with $500 at stake and incomplete information.

This was my deadline too. I decided not to accept the offer - it was a good one financially, but all of their written material gave me a bad vibe. Plus, they don't like you to come visit after you get in, because of course you're supposed to fly all over the country to visit potential programs before you apply.. <_< I visited schools that were close to me, but for the out of state visits just weren't feasible.

Went on an admitted students visit today at another university and really liked it - I think I've made my choice! ^_^

  5. Congradulations we are pleased to offer you a teacher asssistant position in the college of arts .....Letter went on to explain I'd be teaching remedial English ....I was thrilled went around with a huge smile on my face, told all my LOTR;s, my parents (my mom cried) me in a funded masters I think is her dream, all my classmates who know the crap I have gon e through in the last two years who were all so happy for me. Woke up the next to an e-mail saying "It is with real regret that I must inform you that we cannot offer you admissions....."

What the heck?? Can someone explain this too me! I cired, like a baby had to tell everyone again. Burst into tears at the end of the day. See I have several other apps to hear back from. But this university (where I plan to apply to do a Phd since apparently I am not even waitlisted to do my MA) is near my undergraduate school, it is a very well respected school that would allow me to stay close to what is familar, my boyfriend and freinds. Not only that, there is no program in the country that better matches my research interests. Two of my LOTRS worked at that school (one currently teaches a night class thier each week). When I inquired as to why, they said they mistakenly offered me the TA becuase the department that did it assumed I had been accepted. Anyways if you wanna talk painful rejectiosn.....this could not have hurt any worse.....and it makes me feel like all of this is for nothing (because other then it, all I have thus far is one acceptance from a way too expensive school with no fudning for me) I am Canadian and therefore its much harder to get loans...and this rejectoion was from one of my lower ranked schools.....I was so sure I was going to get in, especially after the TA

That is awful!!!! :o I am giving you an internet hug!

  6. I don't know for sure, but I have heard that the rankings have a loooot to do with the research that the schools put out (I think that is why smaller schools are typically lower). I have been told that the rankings do very little to judge how good your clinical/education experience will be...and as someone who isn't very interested in the research aspect of the field, I am basically ignorning those rankings because the clinical aspect matters a whole lot more to me.

Definitely don't stress about it. There's a full explanation on their website, but the abbreviated version is that faculty and administrators at accredited programs review other programs. Since they're peer reviews, research plays a big role. They should be taken with a grain of salt for that reason.

Yeah, good question. Their FAQ says "All the health rankings are based solely on the results of peer assessment surveys sent to deans, other administrators, and/or faculty at accredited degree programs or schools in each discipline. All schools surveyed in a discipline were sent the same number of surveys. Respondents rated the academic quality of programs on a scale of 1 (marginal) to 5 (outstanding)...Peer surveys were conducted by the market research firm Synovate. [surveys were sent to] audiology programs and speech-language pathology programs accredited by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (response rate 55 percent and 31 percent, respectively)"

Thanks, you guys, that makes me feel a lot better. I just keep doubting myself and my choices during this whole process!! I'll be happy when I finally sign my name to a school. I'm visiting that particular school on Monday, so that will be the only fact I'll take into consideration... not some US News rating!

  7. US News World & Report posted its 2013 rankings today. While we all know these should be taken with a grain of salt, I thought it was interesting to see the changes.

Does anybody know what the rankings are based on? I have zero clue, and a school that I think I really like dropped significantly. :( It's a small program, so I wonder if that factors in...? I'm just really curious how much they should impact my decision of where to go... I've gotten into much higher ranked schools than the one I thought was my first choice, and its lower ranking makes me nervous!

I just don't know how much stock to put in them... I'd like to know what they're based on! Anybody have any clue?

  8. For those of you who applied to Cincinnati, does anyone know if all acceptances were sent this week? I noticed on the results that everyone seemed to get accepted on the same day.

I applied to Cincinnati too. I don't mean to be all negative, but I'm kind of thinking no email yet = waitlisted or rejected. I noticed from the results last year that all the acceptances went out closer to the beginning of March, whereas all the rejections and waitlists were sent out closer to the end of the month. I mean, I hope not but... kind of looks that way to me. :-/

And also... I misspelled something in my personal statement, so I wouldn't admit me either, lol. Right after I pressed submit on CSDCAS I realized my mistake, and started freaking out. They let me send them a corrected statement, but... let's just say the word I misspelled is pretty embarrassing for a speech-language pathology major to get wrong, especially when listing it as one of their interests!! At least the school wasn't a super top choice for me, and I have gotten in elsewhere, but still...

  9. A question for those of you who were recently accepted by the University of South Carolina - did any of you state an interest in one of the specialty tracks (AVT/CI or neurogenic disorders)? Did your acceptance letter say anything about you being admitted to one of the tracks? I'm just curious to know if anyone knows anything before I call the department. Thanks!

In my personal statement I told them I was interested in the neurogenic track. It didn't say anything about it in the acceptance letter, so I emailed them. Here's the reply I got:

Generally, students apply for the Neurogenic or Cochlear Implant Tracks at the beginning of their second year. However, if you mentioned your desire to do the Neurogenic track in your application letter and are in good standing (grade-wise and in the clinic) you should have no trouble getting in.
