Congrats!!!

Just checked OSU's website and it's a reject.

Thanks, Kelkel!

My only admit so far has been to an M.A. program, in the form of a short letter via snail mail with no mention at all of funding. Do you guys think it's okay to email the program coordinator to ask about the possibility of funding or T.A. opportunities?

You could fill a teacup with what I technically know about art history -- only had some introductory level undergrad courses. But I have found that using art in lectures has been invaluable for me, especially in introducing a new period/culture/religion, etc. It really gets the students talking (instead of sitting there like zombies) expressing their perceptions of what a piece tells them and then relating it back to the lecture.

Congrats to uhohlemonster! Still nothing here from the history PhD programs I applied to but I did get an acceptance today from IUB's Central Eurasian Studies M.A. program. Yay!
-
Congratulations!
-
Congrats! I applied there too. Hope to hear something soon.

Thanks. The days can't go by fast enough at this point.

I still haven't heard anything and my status has said "in review" for months now.

I'm a GTA right now and at my school we get assigned to one prof in lower level history courses with 70-80 students. The pay is minimal but there is a tuition waiver. We do 50% of the grading, help create exams, and lecture three times each semester. I discussed this in my applications because I thought it gave me a lot of good teaching experience so I hope they don't look down on it. I was also told to add it to my CV as teaching experience and as an award.

Sorry Kelkel. Don't give up yet though!

Congrats TMP! I'm so happy for everyone who's getting good news.

My app got switched to a different department just recently. I originally applied to IU History with a Middle East concentration but they temporarily suspended this sub-field for 2012. I was able get it switched to the Central Eurasian Studies Department at the very last minute. I'm pretty happy about it because it would be a better fit for me anyway. Good luck to everyone!

I did an intensive summer program (equivalent to two semesters of language) with no other coursework and then in the fall I did another intensive combo class. It was difficult in the fall, cramming another two semesters of a lang into one, but luckily I only had one grad level history course and TA duties. I didn't get grad level credit for the lang courses but they did count towards keeping my hours at "full-time" status. It was worth it.

Nat, I completely agree with you. I'm finishing up my M.A. right now and I think it was definitely worth it. I was able to network at more conferences, pick up a second language and provide a thesis chapter as a writing sample which is related to my proposed dissertation topic. Also, two years of TA experience has been invaluable. A funded M.A. is not a bad thing at all.

My quant is low too but one section explained that out of 21 nominations they are allowed to propose 11 waivers of the GRE or GPA requirement if the rest of the application is strong. I'm not sure how often they actually give waivers but it's keeping hope alive for me at this point.

Congrats to everyone who's already received good news and good luck to those who are still waiting (like me)! For those of you applying to Ohio State I figured I'd put this out there. It's a link to a huge PDF that describes their fellowship criteria, GRE and GPA requirements, number of nominations allowed, etc. On page 33 of the document there is a nomination calender with dates! http://www.gradsch.osu.edu/Depo/PDF/Fell_Announce.pdf Also, I've lurked here a lot and occasionally chimed in, but I've never properly introduced myself. So hello! Btw, my field is medieval Central Asian History so I'm applying to some Middle East/Islamic programs and some World History programs as well.

Hi Zephyr99, I don't know where you are located but North Georgia (a military affiliated college) offers an intensive Summer Language Institute and it's not expensive. They offer Korean, Chinese, Russian and Arabic. I know someone from UNC who went there last summer and liked it. Good Luck!

Hello All, Just wanted to chime in and say I was pretty disturbed by that UM post as well. I'm doing Middle East and really wanted to apply there. It can't be legit.

Congrats to Teachgrad and good luck to Safferz! Also, that Indiana results post was mine...bummer.

Thanks for the encouragement. I doubled checked and the payment went through fine (only once) back in October. I emailed to see what was up and got an auto-response saying that I should get an answer in 1-3 business days. Hopefully, it's just a clerical error. Fingers crossed!

Hello everyone, Has anyone ever had an application fee refunded for no apparent reason? I got an automated email today saying that the fee was being refunded to my credit card, with no explanation and no change in my application status online. I am flipping out now wondering why. Any clues?
