  1. Could the person who posted the McGill acceptance provide any more information? Was it a personalized email and, if so, who did it come from? Congrats on getting in, seems like a really interesting program.

edit: Would also be curious to know if you're Canadian.

  2. Thought I'd say hello, since I've been quietly reading the forums. I'm a recent graduate of GSU's MA program, and my interests are 19th century German philosophy, aesthetics, and political philosophy. I'm applying to 12 schools—pretty much the ones you would expect for someone who wrote a thesis on Hegel.

I can also claim the first Northwestern wait list on the results page. It's nice to start out with not-bad news this time around.

Edit: By the way, I'd be happy to answer any questions people might have about Georgia State. Last year, I had good conversations with a few people who were considering attending. Just send me a PM.

  3. Ha. Yeah, I'll probably upload the same sample again. That's seems to be the only safe option. (Although I don't know how they could object to funny philosophy jokes.)

    (Oregon)

Not sure about Oregon in particular, but many schools have these extra fields to accommodate non-philosophy programs that require two samples. My understanding is that you can safely leave one blank.

edit: sorry, I see now that you say the system won't let you do that. Weird.

  4. I think I lean this way as well. Plus, considering my interest in Aesthetics, there's a bit more for me to work with in PI and PPF than in the Tractatus.

You probably know this, but there's a ton of good stuff on aesthetics in Culture and Value. My favorite LW line comes from that collection: "What's ragged should be left ragged."

  5. I've been lurking (with the account I made when I applied for the M.A. program I'm now finishing) but I'll get in on this! Kierkegaard made me realize I wanted to do philosophy, so he's been a constant influence. I've learned a lot from late Wittgenstein (I especially admire his method). And these days my views are probably closest to Hegel's.

  6. I was wondering whether that was in reference to the fall 2012 entrance - only as the 'season' underneath the program says 's12'... I don't know, it's what I'm using to rationalize what would be a mini-freak out.

Ah, good catch. Maybe it is for the spring, although it seems a little late for such a notification. Or maybe, as some people on whogotin are speculating, it's fake; there aren't any other UNC acceptances yet...

  7. If you search for your prospective programs in the results survey, you can see if anyone did interviews in the last few years. (Though, unfortunately, you can't filter for interview results, as far as I can tell.) Of the places I'm applying, I think the only one that has interviewed in the recent past is Penn State.

I'm done all my applications - just trying to ensure that letters, transcripts, samples, etc all arrive at the right places. I'm graduating this year with an Honours BA from McGill in philosophy, minors in classics and political theory. I'm applying to a sort of ridiculous amount of schools:

MA @ Toronto, Western, Queen's, and UBC

PhD @ Northwestern, Georgetown, Harvard, Yale, Chicago, MIT, Rutgers, Columbia, NYU, and Chapel Hill

My areas of interest are contemporary normative ethics and political philosophy (non-consequentialism, distributive justice). I also have an interest in French and German phenomenology (Heidegger, Husserl, Merleau-Ponty), but will only really pursue this if I am lucky enough to get into one of the pluralist schools to which I applied (although I would obviously be lucky to get into any of the schools to which I applied!). Good luck, everyone!

We're applying to a lot of the same places! (And I've also applied to way too many.) My list: Chicago, Stanford, Columbia, Memphis, Northwestern, Yale, UC Riverside, Boston U, Boston College, Stony Brook, Penn State, WashU.

I graduated from Swarthmore College, and my interests are in language, art, and literature, primarily from a continental point of view. Historical interests in Wittgenstein and Hegel, as well as 19th century continental more broadly.

All of my materials are submitted, so now there's nothing to do but be extremely nervous and hope for the next month to pass quickly. Good luck to you and to all in weathering the admissions season!
