  1. I also turned down an offer from Duke. It was most definitely not related to their funding package, which is phenomenal. After making visits, I decided that Indiana was a better fit for me, and so accepted that offer. Best of luck to those on the waitlist! The visit convinced me that they have a great department; it just wasn't quite right for me.
  2. I don't know much about other programs, but I can tell you that UNC-Charlotte does provide funding to many of its students. There are a number of TA positions available throughout the year, mostly in Research Methods, Quantitative Methods, and one or two writing-intensive courses. Some second year students have been invited to work on a long-term NSF-funded research project. The typical funding package includes an out of state tuition waiver, tuition remission, and a fair (albeit not enormous) stipend . The department is very strong, with a number of faculty members publishing regularly in top journals. The current president of the SSS is also in the department. It's a good place to be, and regularly places its graduates in top PhD programs. I don't think it's too late to apply, and I recommend it wholeheartedly.
  3. Those are my interest areas, and I applied to UNC, Duke, UCSB, UCI, Indiana, UMass Amherst, and a couple of others that I'm less interested in. Some of those were driven more by my interest in the role that race plays in political discourse, but most are tied to political sociology/movement stuff in general. How about yourself?
  4. I was the first one. I wondered about the clarity of my statement of purpose as well. I assume these types of interviews are designed to ensure that the applicant is actually a coherent person whose application wasn't put together for them by their advisor, or something of the sort (at least I hope that's all it is). Never done one of these before. I'm interested to see how it goes.
  5. I was the first one. 3.1 undergrad GPA at a large State school, 4.0 MGPA at another large state school (in final semester), 660V, 770Q, 4.5W. Never done one of these before. I'm interested to see how it goes.
  6. I highly recommend UNC-Charlotte. The last time that I applied to graduate programs, I was only accepted here and at Kansas, and Kansas didn't offer any funding. Despite the program at UNCC not being very well known, the faculty here publish very well, are well-respected in the discipline, and are very supportive throughout the MA process. Their emphasis on strong graduate work and publishing is what made me a viable candidate for PhD programs. Can't recommend it highly enough.
  7. I didn't have any contact with anyone prior to the phone call. Dr. Andrews told me that I would be receiving official documentation in the mail sometime in the next week or so, but didn't give me any information regarding other applicants. Sorry I can't be of more assistance.
  8. Thanks! In my last semester of a Sociology MA program, developing a thesis on right wing social movements; applied in the areas of political soc, social movements and race. UGPA: 3.08 MGPA: 4.0 GRE 660V 770Q 4.5 Analytical RA on an NSF project, and on one publication that's under review at a crim. justice journal, and a couple of conference presentations.
  9. That's me. I got a phone call from Andy Andrews today, letting me know that I should expect acceptance materials via mail sometime in the next few days. I mentioned him in my SOP, so I'm guessing that's the reason he's the one that gave me the call. Recruitment weekend is at the end of February.
