  1. I always try twice to get in touch with a professor before I call it quits. Most of the time mail/emails get misplaced, so I always reference the fact that I previously mailed them and never received a response. Most professors are pretty prompt about getting back after the second letter, that is if they indeed want to answer your question
  2. I have a decent list of M.A./Ph.D. programs that I'm pretty happy with and will apply to in a few months, but I wanted to get some other ideas before I finalize the list. Any thoughts?
  3. What is on my mind?

  4. My two cents: Most professors are either knee-deep in research, teaching, or don't want to be bothered with anything during the summer, so rarely will sending anything this soon be helpful. Secondly, while e-mail is great at quickly getting in touch with people, I hardly consider it memorable. I had professors for my undergrad that wouldn't even read mail sent from outside the university, if it even made it past the spam filter. Write a letter and mail them if you're gun-ho about writing a POI, just include your email address for easy communication on their part. Personally I don't believe a POI letter will do much in the way of getting accepted, unless it's a smaller less competitive program, but there are exceptions to every rule.
  5. It's do-able, it just takes some work is all. One of my professors received her B.A. in Religious studies and decided that she wanted to get her Ph.D. in Art History. If I remember correctly she didn't recommend it because you're mostly going in with a blank slate, and have to spend a lot of time playing catch-up, but obviously with a lot of work it's accomplishable. Take a few upper level undergrad classes if possible, or just see if a professor will let you sit in on class so you know what you're in for. The writing style is the only thing that will take some getting use to, and like the previous person said, if you can get away with just a M.A. then consider yourself lucky.
  6. Trying to make the deadlines for Fall 2012, so I could use a little help. I don't buy into any kind of ranking system that says one school is better than another, and I don't believe in going to a university simply because so-and-so works there. What I do believe in is free education, a living stipend, and maybe even a travel stipend after your 3rd year. I focus on the Northern Renaissance, more precisely Imagery of Witchcraft from the 14th-17th century, so if you know of any program along those lines that gives most students a free ride, I'm sold. I can learn the same things anywhere, but I'd much rather be getting paid to do it. Thanks
