I just got a very confusing email from a POI at Columbia. She responded to an inquiry I sent her a while ago. Very thoroughly. Encouragingly. I wasn't accepted last week but haven't been rejected yet either. But, if I had been rejected, why would she take the time to respond as she did...ugh so confused

I know how that feels! But at least we both still have alternatives. EDIT: On a side note I'll be interviewing undergraduate applicants to my school as an alumn volunteer tomorrow so I'm just going to have to get past any and all bitterness. I really do want to portray my school positively after all.

Thanks! I know my adviser kept insisting when I applied that I shouldn't take a rejection by my undergrad personally but it still is a particularly bitter pill to swallow. Congrats on UW-M to you!

I'm back from my trip only to find I was rejectefd by my undergraduate institution (Princeton) as well as Duke. Oh well...
-
Thanks guys! I hope you'll get good news soon!
-
I was the WashU admit(with generous funding too!)! Such a relief! Best of luck to everyone!

Okay, I broke down and emailed someone at Duke with whom I've been in touch. I have a decent excuse anyway: I'm leaving tomorrow and I'll be offline for a while so I won't necessarily be able to access my decision.
-
I'd love to know that too!
-
Congrats to whoever got into Duke! I'm waiting to hear from them too...

Well I don't think I'm going to go tech free by choice--I definitely want to know as soon as possible if any admission results come out --but there will almost certainly be legs of this trip when I'll be off the grid due to lack of coverage...

Tomorrow I'm leaving for a week-and-a-half long trip to Southern Utah and the Grand Canyon with a couple of friends. We'll be doing hiking, camping and maybe some skiing. We're even going to try to hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back again (two day trip of course!). Thank god I'm leaving tomorrow too..I'm starting to go crazy with anxiety. I need a vacation. I only hope a Grad School or POI doesn't try to reach me while I'm at the bottom of the Canyon...

I've had some downtime this morning and boy is that bad for me. I start obsessing about this when I have nothing else to do...

Thirded, but I must say that I think I enjoyed The Shining a tad bit more.

Good idea! At any given time--this year especially--I'm usually switching between two or three books at once. I'll pick one up one night and then another the next and keep cycling like so. I just finished Eric Foner's wonderful new book The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery. I've always been a Foner fan but I have to say this one was one of my favorites. It was very well-written, readable and just a generally refreshing take on Abraham Lincoln. I also just read Devil in the White City by Erik Larson about H.H. Holmes and the Chicago World's Fair. It was a fun read! Right now, I'm reading Stephen King's Skeleton Crew and James Loewen's Sundown Towns. I have to say that I'm not particularly engaged in the latter one. It's a worthy endeavor, but I find that he is kind of grasping at straws for evidence at some points. Somebody ought to now follow up by writing a more "close-up" history of a sundown town or two. I discovered Stephen King during the summer of 2010 and I've been crazy about him ever since. I think it comes from my love of horror movies. I pick up one of his books whenever I feel like I need a distraction for a while. I read Under the Dome in two completely obsessive days that summer. Since then, I've read Cell, The Shining, IT, Full Dark, No Stars, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon and now Skeleton Crew. Great stories, I loved The Mist. EDIT: Oh and I got a Kindle for Christmas. It's certainly helped with my leisure reading.

I know it's crazy how excited/anxious that can make you feel isn't it? I got a notification that someone googled me while I was tutoring a kid the other night and for the rest of the session I was basically on another planet. She could have said 2+2=5 and I would have just nodded my head and said "yup, that sounds good..."
-
That sounds nice.
-
Well that must be it for me then. Best of luck to you Owls!

Totally awake here Goldielocks...and trying to prepare myself for rejection.
-
Congrats! I second Safferz's questions too.

I have a feeling that this week I might hear something.
-
Congrats to the UNC+fellowship admit. If UNC's History department is following the same schedule as last year, the rest of us UNC applicants should be hearing next week or the week after.

I honestly have no idea but I'll venture a guess. I feel fairly optimistic about my chances at 3 of my 11 schools. Pretty bad about 5 others and mixed about the last three. So let's say 3 acceptances, 5 rejects and 3 wait lists.

Thanks Kelkel! Here's to hoping you get one too!

Just got a very encouraging email from a POI! Feeling pretty good.

Met with two POIs at one of the programs I applied to in person yesterday. Feeling more confident but also more eager than ever to start getting decisions.
