Ah, I see that the first wave of "IT'S COMING THIS WEEKEND OMG OMG OMG" has come and gone I want another one to keep my days interesting. Life will be much less suspenseful when these dumb results are released...

Echoing what others have been saying, this is an email response I got from an advisor who is one of the chemistry group reviewers:

"The panels met about 4 weeks ago (quite a bit earlier than we met last year), but the program officers indicated that there is going to be a long delay before the results come out as they want to make a very detailed analysis of the students in the "possible" category, many of whom will get a fellowship."

I decided to add two more schools to my list, UT Austin and UT Southwestern, bringing my total number of applications to 13. I figured that I need to play the numbers game to guarantee at least one acceptance.

I notice that a couple people have received interview offers from Scripps in the past few days, so I guess it's not too late for me to hear back.

    Dear Everyone,

Please stop freaking out, pitying yourself, and asking if you should assume rejections from every school you haven't heard from. A lot of programs had very recent deadlines (Stanford, GTech, and Wisconsin-Madison were all less than 2 weeks ago!). You can't assume that the professors and admissions committees at these schools are looking at our applications 24/7. There are a LOT of applications to consider, and these things take time. So, CHILL OUT! I heard from 2 schools today - UChicago & GTech, so CLEARLY some programs are still making decisions. Hope for the best, and don't assume rejections for at least another month. No one on this forum knows whether or not you should assume rejection unless they've contacted the program and asked. Best of luck to you all

    SIncerely, Liveoak.

I think that since a number of people received early admits before Jan 1st., people are expecting to hear from all of their schools like yesterday. It is only January 13th, and many grad coms are still making decisions on first round admits (Vanderbilt's deadline isn't until Jan 15th).

That was me. I got a call today from a professor who I hadn't mentioned on my SOP. However, he said that another professor (who I had expressed interest in) was very impressed by my application.

He also mentioned that this was a sort of "early-admissions" wave of acceptances that they wanted to get out before the holidays. Visitation dates are in march, but he said that they would be sending out an acceptance packet within the next couple of weeks that gives more detailed information about stipend, visits, and other administrative things.

EDIT: I sent in my application the second week of November.

I just got my first admittance: University of Illinois UC. I'm very surprised that any decisions were made this early, but I'm very happy to know that I've been accepted by at least one school!
