  1. Hey people, I have an idea! New facebook timeline has an option of posting "Life Event". I think I will add it as my life event after I decide which grad school to attend. If people think it is not a "Life Event", then suck on that yo loosers :P

    What do you people think?

p.s. we all need some bragging to live. After studying like crazy for 4 years, we need some occasions to rejoice.

I think it's a great idea! If I get into one, I will do that

  2. I believe that MIT can only take a few internationals every year (someone I worked with at my lab who applied there said like 2-3) due to funding restrictions :(

I guess it's not just MIT but every other schools :(. I don't feel very hopeful now...

  3. Sending updates to schools. Results:

School 1: Hmm... Should we tell her that we already rejected her? Nah. Tell her to send her updates via post. By the time they reach us she should have got her rejection letter. Don't wanna deal with a cry baby, not now.

School 2: Poor kid. Should have told her to stop waiting when she emailed to enquire about the completion of her app. She doesn't know that her file has already been deleted from the system... Telling her now is too cruel, so let her wish be granted. (Then email to tell me that my folder has been updated.)

School 3 and 4: (Look at my email extension) This country... Hmm... I don't think anyone has ever made it. (Then delete my email.)

  4. Bad dayssss:

"Why did this student submit her application so early? Must be a careless person who just wants to get over with applying asap, and therefore not a very serious candidate. Indeed I see mistakes here and there. Waste of time. Next!"

"Girl do you think this many publications of yours can compensate for your not so stellar GPA? What? Look at her AW score! Are you kidding me? Can't comprehend why she could even think of applying here in the first place! Next!"

"Unbelievable! Look at the list of schools she is applying to! She is asking for the moon! Next!"

"Still code in the obsolete language X? Doesn't even know C++ and she wants to work with our Professor Y? I bet he won't even care looking at her pubs and LORs. I'd rather save his precious time. Next!"

    Better days:

"Her profile is not so bad! Good GPA, though not stellar. Look at how many papers she has published, that's pretty impressive! The recommenders think pretty highly of her. Hmm, but still her GRE scores aren't that great. I guess I should put her in the middle pile for consideration later. There are so many other applicants with perfect grades, perfect scores, and plenty of research experience. Next!"

    Good days:

I cannot think of anything promising atm, esp when so many people but I, have heard back from the schools :(. And look at their profiles only further diminish my hope...

  5. ^Yes, DEFINITELY send an update. That sort of thing is uber-important and could definitely mean the difference between waitlist and accept, or between accept and ACCEPT RIGHT NOW WITH ~ALL THE FUNDING!~

Congratulations on your paper getting accepted! :D

Thanks a lot gellert! I just emailed the schools to notify them of my accepted publication and asked if I could send an updated list of publications and CV now. I'm not very sure what to do in your situation, but if you think it adds some weight to your application then as gradapp2012 said, letting them know at least should not hurt your chance. Perhaps as I did, you can email them with the updates and ask if it's ok to send your updated CV...

  6. Hi gellert and everyone, I got an article recently accepted for publication. For one of the school I submitted my application in October, so by that time I hadn't even submitted my manuscript for review yet. In my apps to the other 3 schools I mentioned an article under review. Now as my article is accepted, should I email to the schools and tell them that? I have been thinking and I thought maybe I should just leave it there... The adcom is perhaps extremely busy atm. Will a paper add anything significant now to my application? What do you think? Thanks a lot :).

  7. Hi twb,

    My stats are:

    GPA 3.99 (4.0 major)

    GRE 700V/780Q, Chem GRE 850

3 years research experience in same lab

    2 poster presentations

    1 publication (JACS, 2nd author)

    TA experience

    Other chemistry-related extracurriculars

What a great way to start the New Year! Good luck to all other applicants!

I definitely didn't contact any of the professors before applying. I received the call from Professor Nolan, whose research ties well with my personal statement. It sounds like acceptance notifications have only gone out to a few bio/bio-inorganic people thus far. I'm sure that there'll be a wave of new acceptances in January.

I think it's not too surprising given your stats and research experience, especially if your research fits perfectly with a faculty member. Congratulations again! Indeed a wonderful news at this time of the year. Happy new year!

  8. Hi guys,

Have any of you completed Berkeley's app? If so, what is listed for the status of your research summary when you go to look at the application status? I just have a dashed line. I know that I uploaded my summary and that it was < 10 mb, but this weird dashed line that I'm seeing has me worried. Sorry for being neurotic...

SpenzK: I was worried seeing the --- after i submitted my apps too. I thought i might have accidentally deleted the file (and many other ludicrous possibilities i could think of). But the status was updated to Received after a week or so. Don't worry :).

  9. Go big or go home right? Actually I figure this is my last chance to really earn a big name on my degree so if I don't get in I'd rather just wait a year and try again than go to a mediocre school. After you get a Ph.D. that's it right? :P

Feel good now. I agree. Go big or go home. I only applied to 4 schools: Harvard, Stanford, Berkeley, and Caltech. I have been feeling a bit worried lately, but now I guess I feel much better. What will be, will be.

  10. Hey congrats contretemps! At least you have got options to choose from... Yeah I think it would be hard to give up Paris, but think about it, if you eventually need a PhD, then I would think you should do PhD now. You can always go to Paris for postdoc, and by that time you will have more money to enjoy Paris and travel around.

Anyway you are still waiting to hear from other schools, so you may have even better options for PhD coming up. Good luck ;).

  11. Congratulations mcstev13!!! You have already got two offers! That's really amazing, especially to hear back from the schools this early.

ah233: No, I'm not from MIT. I think I wouldn't be here whining if I were from MIT :(. I didn't do my undergrad in US. You are going for computational chem too! Good luck :-)

Good luck everyone, and have a happy holiday!

  12. I am an international applicant. Applying to Harvard, Stanford, Caltech, and Berkeley in Theoretical Chemistry.

    GRE: 800Q, 540V, 3.5A. Chemistry: 810

    Toefl: 115 (30L, 29W, 29R, 27S)

GPA: 4.6/5.0 (~4.8/5.0 major), already graduated with First Class Honors.

    Some awards.

4 years of research experience since sophomore: 3 summers, 2 UROPS, final-year project, and 1.5 years as RA.

3 first-authored publications in ACS journals and another first-authored paper under review (accepted recently).

What do you guys think of my chance? When I applied I thought these schools are the only places I wanted to go to, and my supervisor told me to apply to only top schools. Now I'm thinking I am mad, but it's too late...

Do you think I'm out of my mind? I am on fire waiting for the results now...
