  1. Hi all, Just got my GRE lit scores and I'm a little confused (I'm very new to standardised testing!). On my GRE page it gives me a scaled score and then a "% below". Is the number under the latter my percentile? I'm getting confused because of the "below"...
  2. Haha, no problem! Like you, I've already found out at least one of my guesses was wrong (damn you Seamus Heaney!). But oh well, we've done it!
  3. I wonder did you get the same one I did? I wish we could discuss the test in detail without fearing the wrath of ETS! One of the first questions was identifying a passage from the most famous Irish modernist novel and recognising allusions in it?
  4. I took the lit test this Saturday as well and I was actually quite relieved. It was a tough test, but in the ways I expected. Didn't think there were too many curve balls thrown in there. There were some questions I hadn't a blue's clue about - three questions on some mythological dude I'd never heard of - and I thought the theory ones were particularly tricky, but overall I didn't think it was too terrible. Thinking back over it, I've already identified certain questions I got wrong, but eh. Was it the exact same test given in every centre? I took it in England.
  5. I'd appreciate if you could send me a PM! I'm interested in hearing about as many people's experiences as possible. I don't have the PR book - where I live none of the bookshops stock any GRE prep material and I never bothered ordering it online. Perhaps I should've, but it doesn't seem worth it at this juncture! I've been mostly going through the Vade Mecum and Hapax Legomena websites, Wikipedia, the Nortons, etc. I have a fairly good knowledge of British literature from Spenser to the modernists because my departments's requirements, but I have absolutely zero Old or Middle English. They're not too bad to study for, though, cause the exam probably isn't going to ask anything too indepth about, say, Piers Plowman. I've also been reviewing prosody and rhetorical terms, etc, as a lot of that seems to have come up in recent years. It's very irritating not knowing what format the test is going to be. I remember reading panicked people on this forum when they sat the first of English subject test that was more about reading long comprehension passages than identifying authors. To be honest, I'd prefer more identification questions - not sure how to prep for reading comprehensions! As an English major I'd like to think I'm fairly good at quickly parsing passages, but it's hard to gauge!
  6. Hi everyone, I'm another (possible/probable) Fall 2013 literature PhD applicant. I'm just completing my final year of undergrad and I've been accepted to a one year MA in the University of Sussex (I'm Irish). I don't know whether I'll want to stay in the UK for my PhD or whether apply to the States, but possibly I'll try both. Regardless, I'm taking the English subject test in a few weeks just in case. I want to get it out of the way, and part of me is rather perversely enjoying the challenge!
  7. Hello everyone, I'm taking the English subject test in April (before I take the regular one). It's a bit of a pain because I have to fly to a different country to take it (typical GRE money-spinning) but other than that, it's not too bad. It's a ridiculous exam, of course, but I feel almost excited about the challenge. I think I have a fairly okay grasp of most canonical stuff post-Shakespeare, but I still have a lot of work to do for it. Anyone else prepping for the one in April? I'm dearly hoping it's going to be a canon one, rather than the reading comp one. Is there any way of guessing which form it's going to take? PS. Not sure if this thread should be here, or in the Literature forum.
  8. Thanks both of you for your help! What's the deal with reporting scores? I don't know yet which schools I'll be applying to next year so I didn't enter any names for ETS to send scores to. Is it okay if I just do the test, receive my own scores, and let the schools know afterwards?
  9. Hi folks, I'm planning to take the Revised GRE early next spring, for applications in Fall 2012. I'm a English lit person and I've been advised by a few different sources that PhD admissions staff in English departments don't bother looking at the quantitative result, but I don't know whether just to trust these sources completely or not. I'd like not to do atrociously on the maths section, even if it won't hinder my application I'm sure it won't help it. I haven't done maths in 4 years, since leaving secondary school. I was fairly ok at it back then, not a maths whizz, but competent. However, the break from it has wiped a lot of maths out of my head! Can anyone recommend a decent book to study for the quantitative section in particular? I've heard Barron's being mentioned a lot, are they also good for the revised GRE? Cheers!
  10. Noted. Thanks for that! I'm going to call ETS in the morning (it's too late where I am right now) and explain the situation to them. It is only a middle initial, which isn't like a surname change or anything. Thanks again!
  11. Or could I just re-register for an account using, say, a different address (a work address, or my mother's address or something)? I presume that they already had someone at my address registered they refused a second application. Does the address really matter?
  12. Hi everyone, I signed up for an account at ETS to register for the GRE a while ago and I put my middle initial on the form. I was just in the process of registering for a test when I realised that my passport (which I was planning to use as primary identification) doesn't have my middle name on it. I realise there's no way to change my name on the ETS website (which seems pointless inconvenient) and I even tried to just make another account, but they wouldn't allow that. Bear in mind I haven't yet registered for a test, that's just the details that I have on my account. Where do I go from here? Will there be issues at the test centre if my middle initial is on the admission slip but not my ID? Thanks!
