  1. Thanks guys, I will go ahead and put his name in there. One more question... is it recommended that I name specific faculty members of the program that I am applying for when I am talking about my research interests? For my program I don't need to designate a faculty member that I want to study under, I just need to talk about areas of research that I am interested in.
  2. If I am talking about working for a professor as a research assistant in my SOP, should I name the professor or just refer to him as 'my professor'?
  3. I'm not really sure where to post this, so I think I will try both here and the econ forum. I'm considering grad programs and up until now I've been set on getting a PhD in economics, but a professor recently suggested that I look into a few applied stats programs. Since my primary interest is in econometrics and applied stats, this might be a better fit and somewhat easier to get into a better school. Does anyone have any thoughts about the benefits of doing an applied stats program vs. a PhD in economics or vice versa? (I am a math major with a lot of upper division courses in modeling and probability theory so I have the background for either program)
  4. I am a math major at a large state university, 3.3 GPA overall and 3.1 in my major. I have basically every math class you can take at the undergraduate level including adv. calc. My GRE scores are awful.. 700Q and 560V... I've taken it twice and scored exactly the same both times. I am the primary author on a research paper with a well-respected faculty member in the economics department, we will have submitted by the time i send in my applications. Also I have 3 very strong LOR's, and teaching experience as a tutor in the economics department. I understand that I can't get in to anywhere good with my low quant score. Does anyone have any suggestions of where to apply? Even the schools that are ranked worse than top 50 boast average GRE scores much higher than mine... I was thinking of applying to schools such as NC State, UConn, Clemson, American University. Any thoughts?
  5. I've been reading through the forum here and I see a lot of great advice but it seems like most is geared toward english and humanities grad programs. I guess it's different with econ, you aren't necessarily supposed to have clear research objectives or propose a project idea as far as I know. That being said, does anyone have any advice for writing a SOP when you don't need to specify a project?
  6. I'm applying to PhD programs in economics. My profile is pretty weak, I'm a math major with a 3.3 gpa and a 700 Q on GRE (I know its terrible, I've taken it twice and scored exactly the same) and I am submitting a research paper that I coauthored with a well-known economics faculty member. Does anyone have any advice on how to overcome the low GRE score? Do I have any hope at all?
