  1. One of my professors received his Ph.D from Michigan and raves about it. According to him, they have really great placement of their graduates. Something to consider is that they use Seligson's method for teaching Greek, so if you've never picked up her "Greek for Reading", I would do so. Her idea of "kernels" is generally not known amongst folks who don't have U Michigan (or Iowa) connections.
  2. I'm not even applying until next semester and after reading this particular thread, I had a dream that my mailman (who later in the dream became my mother) drove out into the desert to find me and gave me a letter. At this point the mailman becomes my mom and she's telling me to open the letter, at which point I see "I'm sorry to tell you that...." and then a page full of grammatically incorrect sentences about nonsense. I woke up angry about receiving such a bad letter from a prestigious university. So, thanks for making me a nutter about this process several months before I even jump into it. I figure this is probably healthy.
  3. I will be applying to programs next Fall (for Fall of 2010). I've been told that even though I'm double-majoring in Religion and Classics (and will thus have had plenty of Latin and Greek), I'll still need a Masters of some sort to be competitive. If your languages are in order and if you've had plenty of courses in the particular area, I don't think it's a complete lost cause. If you don't have a good grasp on primary and secondary literature (which is still hard to quantify and show to admissions committees), you should probably pursue an MA/MTS/M.Div first.
