  1. Cece, congratulations!
  2. Cece, was it NYU GSAS or Steinhardt?
  3. purpledinosaur, that's Sam's first post. He's trying to get a rise out of you. Report him, put him on ignore, and move on.
  4. I received a rejection from UCSD via email last night. Ouch!
  5. rebel rebel, mine still says "Incomplete" too. I think that the department forgot to mark the applications as complete. All of my application materials were received by the department in November!
  6. Karajan, silence here. Let's hope that silence isn't a bad sign!
  7. snes, you're in my hometown! How do you like Evanston? I received an email from UC Cruz today saying that admissions decisions have been delayed because they're "in the middle of a search for a senior composition professor". I'm not sure how to take that news, but at least it isn't a rejection.
  8. snes, let's hope your summary comes to fruition. Each day marks a step further on the descent into madness.
  9. Congratulations to those of you who have heard! I'm amazed that you've received responses so soon. I interpret that as a sign that you're incredibly talented and the graduate schools recognized your value!
  10. I'm going to repeat what I said earlier: you are all talented, intelligent musicians with a natural affinity towards the musical arts. Relax. You'll all be fine!
  11. Guys, I ran into file size limits with two universities. I just called the grad admissions departments and asked permission to email my supplemental materials as PDF documents. Size limits are ridiculous for things like scores or scholarly essays. Also, I turned in my applications (including the GRE scores, transcripts, etc) in mid-November and one of the schools still says my application is incomplete. I gave them a call and they confirmed that they take a while to update the online application status. The moral of the story is that you shouldn't worry. Having been through this before I can tell you that grad admissions departments take weeks (if not months) to process materials. You're all talented, bright individuals. Take a breath!
  12. JSK, give them a call. If you don't, you're effectively giving up before you try.
  13. Cal State Los Angeles and Cal State Northridge both have programs. They'd be safeties for you. Very safe. UC Berkeley has a public administration program, but they call it something different: http://gspp.berkeley.edu/ Same with UCLA: http://www.spa.ucla.edu/dept.cfm?d=ps&s=home&f=psintrohome.cfm UC Berkeley would be about as difficult to get into as USC. UCLA would probably be a little easier. Both have very good funding. Here's CUNY's program: http://www1.ccny.cuny.edu/prospective/socialsci/psm/index.cfm There's also the New School: http://www.newschool.edu/milano/ Cornell has a program. Cornell is in Ithaca, New York. It's not in New York City, but it's an Ivy league: http://www.cipa.cornell.edu/ Rutgers University has three programs. It's in New Jersey. This would be a safety for you: http://www.policy.rutgers.edu/ You might consider universities in Massachusetts. Brandeis, Harvard, and U Mass would be good bets. http://heller.brandeis.edu/academic/mpp/index.html http://www.hks.harvard.edu/ http://www.masspolicy.org/ Johns Hopkins is very well thought of, but hard to get into: http://advanced.jhu.edu/academic/government/public-management/index.htm http://ips.jhu.edu/index.cfm The University of Maryland would be a safety for you: http://www.publicpolicy.umd.edu/ Depaul University and the University of Chicago might be options. Depaul would be a safety. The U of Chicago is very hard to get into. http://las.depaul.edu/sps/ http://harrisschool.uchicago.edu/ Finally, U Washington in Seattle might be a good option. It would be hard to get into, but safer than your top picks. http://evans.washington.edu/ I hope that this helps you navigate our somewhat confusing university system!
  14. snes, don't be surprised if a Ph.D. program admits you to their masters program instead. That's fairly common. Also, programs with a terminal masters might be able to provide their masters students with more funding. Just something to think about. fall2012musiccomp, best of luck to you. I'll buy you a beer if we wind up going to the same institution.
  15. fall2012musiccomp, I'm somewhat in love with Stanford and UC San Diego (UCSD). I also applied to UC Santa Cruz (UCSC), NYU, Boston U, Cornell, Washington U in Seattle, Harvard, and U Chicago. Edit: Snes, don't lose your confidence. Not that it helps, but I'm looking at composition with a musicology minor so we have some overlap. Are you applying for a masters degree or a Ph.D.?
