  1. Just got word I'm on the wait list for an Ed.D program at PennGSE. Definitely have mixed feelings: on one hand, there's the optimism of feeling like someone could turn down their offer and I could still attend; on the other hand, I'd almost rather a flatout rejection than two more months of nervous waiting. It's the only school I applied to this year, so I don't have other offers to occupy my attention in the meantime either. Ugh.

I completely understand the agony. But really, it's only another month and a half, so it'll fly by quickly. :)

I've been accepted to UNC Chapel Hill guys! It's a PhD in Education: Culture, Curriculum, and Change. No word on funding yet, so fingers crossed.

Also, called Vanderbilt, and they said first round of offers for the Teaching and Learning PhD have gone out, so if anyone is waiting on that, we won't hear from them till April.

  2. Sorry to hear that. Chin up.

"Everything that happens happens for a reason." I am such a believer in this. I hope everything works out for you.

We're rooting for you! It's still not over yet.

firebird24, this sounds like an awful day! Getting a rejection from your first choice school is a big loss. When I received a rejection from one of my tops someone told me the phrase "this, or something better." Here's hoping that better is out there.

Firebird, I'm sure your remaining choices will work out! I hope you find something else to brighten your spirits this weekend.

You guys don't know how much this means to me. It's been wonderful having you guys around all this while, and especially now. I'm really feeling much better already, and my plan B is looking pretty good actually. You guys are the best!

Litjust, I spent the morning with my brother's kids. Nieces are the best stress-busters :)

  3. Rejected from HGSE :(

Woke up when my phone received a new email notification at 3 AM my time (about 14 hours ago). So crept out of bed, go tot my computer, and checked my status. Not a great start to a weekend.

Oh well. I didn't expect any different anyway. Also, thanfully, it wasn't my first choice :)

Congratulations to everyone on their Stanford, Harvard, and UCLA admits!

And good luck to everyone else. Everything that happens happens for a reason :)

  4. So I've been endlessly refreshing my HGSE application page just so I can finally get my life settled for the next 4 years, and then I notice "Application for Admission" because I didn't click on it before. On the top in bold it reads "Congratulations hitomimay!" I squeak from sheer excitement. Then with baited breath, I keep reading "... you have successfully submitted your application".

    Darnable. :P

:D Hahahah! That sounds like something I would do!

  5. Alright, I had to ask this stupid question, but I would really appreciate your input here:

So I applied to SUSE and HGSE for their PhD/EdD program. I was deferred to SUSE's Masters program (sadly assuming the same will occur for HGSE), and SUSE/HGSE are ranked #1 and #2 for Ed Policy, while USC is ranked #16 in Ed Policy. How much value does a Masters from a top tier program have in terms of finding better jobs in Ed Policy for the future comparatively to a PhD from USC?

I'm trying to decide on which program to go to this upcoming year, and while I'm heavily leaning towards the PhD program at USC, I'll seriously consider the SUSE/HGSE Masters program if most people say there's a huge value to them.

Potentially really stupid question, I realize, but I had to know... :( Thanks!

I'd go with USC all the way. My reasons are the same as what some others have mentioned here- especially this:

I would go to the place that seems to really dig me.

Also, I agree with Wildviolet that for doctoral programs, it's the reputation of your faculty adviser that really counts. From what you've told us, USC really loved you. I've always felt that poorly funded master's programs are how universities cash in on their reputation- I wouldn't recommend those to anyone. So I'd stay away from Harvard and Stanford. (I'm also not sure how much you'll be able to accomplish in 9 months. I can't imagine it will be very much.)

  6. Hi everyone!!

Not sure if many of you applied to Northwestern, but just called them to check up on my application. They've admitted their first round of students and also sent out rejection notices. Those who haven't gotten a decision (via mail or website status) has been wait-listed.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the update, keepswimming :) I can't wait to hear from them. Maybe I should call and ask them about the Learning Sciences admissions. Is there anyone else who has applied to NU's LS program?

I received an offer from Emory today :D it's not my number one, but it comes with guaranteed funding for 5 years, including full tuition, a stipend, and health insurance; plus significant additional funds for travel to conferences and research expenses. This is a good start to my long weekend. I hope everyone keeps hearing positive news!

Congratulations, Litjust! That sounds like a fantastic offer :D

And, by the way, I really love that Arundhati Roy quote, too.

  7. Hey guys. I was away for the weekend- a friend got married on the beach! It was lovely, and I managed to forget about applications and grad school for a while. :)

Congratulations to all who have had good news, and good luck to everyone else!

I had a question- I'm getting a little nervous about one school I have applied to. I felt that my correspondence with a POI there had been very encouraging. Should I write to him now? And what do I say? I'm not even sure what the point of this email would be, but I feel like I need to know now what my chances at this school are. A little advice would help a lot!

  8. Thanks cacao to cacao and wildviolet. Appreciate the sentiments. Thankfully wasn't crushed, and it's all cuz USC was there to prop me back up lol. It was meant to be, I swear. I got home today after SUSE's rejection, checked my mailbox, and this large envelope from USC regarding my funding came, and it had a letter saying congrats again.

It was as if USC was saying to me "it's okay about SUSE, at least we love you very much" lol." <3

I never congratulated you personally on USC! Congratulations! Clearly they are excited to have you on board :) Forget SUSE, go USC!

  9. hitomimay, wayoutwest128, dm242, NOLAConstance:

I genuinely think it's their loss. I'm sure the places you guys finally go to will cherish you and bring out the best in all of you. All the best for the rest of your applications :) I understand it's tough to get a rejection (ugh, hate that word), but I'm someone who believes that everything that happens really happens for the best. We'll all end up in great places and do all kinds of wonderful things in education. I'm convinced of it. Hang in there, y'all. *Hug*

I can't say I completely understand this situation, because I'm not in it, but I can certainly empathize with you and try to share some of my thoughts. The terrible thing about the whole process is it creates so much competition, which I can't stand in general. Still, I hope you can find another way to look at the situation, if you are accepted, aside from thinking of yourself as "second best." I don't think that's true at all. I still believe everything is about fit, but say there are only 5 spots and even though 7 phenomenal people apply, the reality is: there are still really only 5 spots. So, it becomes a difficult decision for the adcomm. They know all of the people they make offers to won't accept, because everyone has their number one choice (which may or might not be Stanford for those who were accepted). I wouldn't go through all the reasons why you're on the wait list and not one of the initial offers. However, they didn't reject you, which means that they still want you. And once you're there, working with who you want and doing all sorts of phenomenal work, the wait list won't mean anything.

You took the words out of my mouth :)

wildviolet, I certainly don't think it means you're second best. It's just a matter of fit- and as you pointed out, since SUSE has only two profs working in science ed, it must have been insanely difficult for the committee to select a really small number of applicants. So good luck on getting off the waitlist- irrespective of whether you decide to go to Stanford or not!

  10. I started getting depressed with a constant empty inbox (usually I feel like I never have enough time to check and respond to all my emails, but lately, it's been so strangely... empty), so I've taken upon myself to suscribe to all GradCafe Education forum updates. Now I know exactly when someone posts on this feed and it goes straight to my e-mail. I've had 20+ emails today alone. Hooray? Hah... hah... hah... this is so depressing. I'm just waiting for February to roll around so decisions can start coming in lol.

My sentiments exactly. Except I've forced myself not to subscribe to gradcafe updates ;) But yes, February is really taking it's time! I just want to know and be done with it!

  11. Not at all! I applied to Higher Ed at Peabody. Did you do the learning, teaching, and diversity in math/sciences?

Yes, that's the one I'm trying for :)

And hey we all know if cardiac arrest gets us a fully funded admit most of us would be fine with it (wow this is why my friends think I'm kinda crazy about this whole "PhD thing").

:D And here I thought I was high-strung about the whole admissions thing ;) Don't go into cardiac arrest! I'm sure you'll impress at your interviews :)

  12. Finished phone meeting with the professor. It went pretty well I suppose. Just mostly talked about the types of research he wanted to start doing, and how he thought I was a good fit for some of them. He then said he hopes that this will be my last Detroit winter, that he's a really laid back advisor, to contact him or his PhD students should I have any more questions, and that admission results will be coming out soon. But no official (or even unofficial) decision.

Am I reading too much into the things he says, or should I be hopeful?! The wait is rough, but I'm certainly grateful I've even made it this far. Oh man...

You're not reading too much at all, I'd say. It's true that you never know till, well, you know, but it sounds like your call went off really well :)

Shouldn't be too much longer till you get your decision now. So excited for you :)

  13. I completely understand how you feel. The reason I lurked instead of creating an account was to try and keep some distance from this site. I'm normally pretty calm and collected but last night when I saw an interview go out to the Special Education PhD at Vanderbilt I FREAKED.OUT. And that's not even my program area. Called my mom at midnight asking if I could just quit my job and move in with her and my dad again since I wouldn't be getting a PhD anytime soon. All I'll say is you've done your best and that's all you can ask of yourself ya know? And yes I understand that doesn't help much (I felt the same way when my mom said it to me last night). Try to stay positive if you can though, maybe do something you really enjoy (movies, reading, etc). Hope this can help in some way!

:) yes, we've done our best and that's really what counts.

But here's a funny coincidence: I had the very same conversation with my mom a week back! Haha :D

  14. You'd be surprised! USC didn't have an interview component publicized either, but here we are! According to GradCafe Results Search, Harvard starting sending out admission notices mid/late Feb last year, so might be sooner than we think! :D

Yes, I think we should expect to hear from Harvard mid-Feb. Which really isn't that far away! I'm looking forward to this :)

And congratulations on getting to interview with the professor! Have a great call and let us know how it went!
