  1. Every program seems to tout a "collegial instead of competitive atmosphere."

What do you guys think of this? Besides the programs typically cited as competitive/cutthroat (Berkeley, Wisconsin, Chicago), have you heard of other schools having this culture?

Obviously we will all visit and speak to people and try to find this out for ourselves, but I think the rumblings around town are sometimes a useful foil to the overly cheery choreography of visiting weekends.

  2. From other applicants I've talked to, having some sort of publication seems like an important application boost. Pretty sure that to get into top programs it's a good idea to have substantial research experience and at least one publication.

Yes, most of them are in UG journals or random other things. Obviously you're not gonna have an ASA article before grad school. But having SOMETHING shows a commitment to scholarship and entering the field.

  3. what do you think is best to say when asked what other programs I am considering? I have a few options, all with very similar prestige/rankings. I don't want to sound like a d-bag by listing all 7 of them, but I also want to be honest/get info.

Should I just mention 1-2? Should I avoid mentioning them at all? If grad students ask, what is the best way to respond?

Thanks!! Your long post was very insightful.

  4. I am so so fortunate to have a few good options to choose from. So I'm mostly confused and overwhelmed. How do I make the right choice? Am I even considering the right factors? How do I make judgements on the shape of my academic career at such an early stage? I have to make some tough calls about which methodological training is most important to me and which scholars I want to align myself with.

Honestly, I wasn't expecting this (delightful) problem. I thought I'd only get in to 1 or 2 places and would just choose the best one. So basically, I am grateful, to the point of reconsidering my lack of religious beliefs bc I don't know who to thank, but EXTREMELY overwhelmed.

  5. Apparently most Princeton grads live in Brooklyn, usually once they've taken comps and only need to be on campus 1-2 a week to teach or meet with profs. In a sense, it seems like the ideal mix of urban and suburban... No distractions when orals loom, NYC to keep you from having only undergrads to socialize with...

  6. This website http://www.phdcompletion.org/promising/selection.asp# including all the info under "promising practices" hints at important factors in encouraging completion. It highlights initiatives the PhD programs should encourage to make sure students complete in a timely matter. I think I will use it to evaluate the level of support of prospective PhD programs.

And @sciencegirl, yes, the website cites findings that financial stress is a top reason for dropping out, and I'm not surprised.

  7. Visit days are this Thursday through Saturday. They asked us to decline as early as possible "by March 15th, if possible" but of course, no formal obligations till April 15th. They are definitely going to feel out the first round and decide based on that.

  8. I have a deep-seated desire to go to Stanford, but I'm trying to be as rational as possible throughout this decision-making process. I'm definitely going to try to feel out "fit" between Stanford and a few other options. But man...its hard not to lose your head amidst sunshine(!), computers and relocation funds..

    What about you @sciencegirl?

  9. They are expecting a cohort of around 14, but I am unsure of how many first round acceptances they sent out. Visit days are March 15-16, so I imagine they will inform all accepted students in the next week to give them time to plan accordingly.

Maybe there's a second wave to come?

  10. SO EXCITED!!

Also seriously shocked. It feels surreal. I had COMPLETELY written off Stanford as not going to happen. So yes, I am now on cloud 9!!

Also, the hints about their funding package sound like the best I've heard of this app season. Wooo! Cali!!

  11. When I feel stressed about stuff like this, I try to remember that I am whole person. My mind/career are not the only aspects of who I am. In fact, they are only two parts of who am, and they aren't even the most important ones.

Think about all the parts of you that have nothing to do with graduate school, your career, and esp what a bunch of strangers on adcoms have to say.

    You will figure it out.

I also agree with above posters that you REALLY shouldn't count your chickens before they hatch (is that how the saying goes....). It's definitely possible that you're only accepted to one out of five schools. Who's to say that you won't get four rejections before one acceptance?

Try to chill out. Spend some time on aspects of your life and yourself unrelated to this admissions madness. And good luck Super!!

  12. Well a prof person emailed to set up a time to reach me by phone. The word "interview" wasn't dropped in the email so I'm assuming it wasn't one. And then I saw two missed calls, googled the #, and it matches.

At this point the call will likely come tomorrow. Hoping it isn't for an interview. But it would be uncommon to cold call for an interview right? Ugh. I just want to be able to sleep!
