  1. Unfortunately that doesn't mean troll for sure, as the poster listed email notification from the department, and it could be that the graduate division has to okay it before the decision status changes. But let's just stay positive, call it a troll, denounce all trolls and their trolling, and quietly go about our business. Wouldn't that be nice?
  2. just checked my decision status page - it says no decision yet. Anyone else?
  3. i wish we could find out how many times the results page gets refreshed in the next 72 hours.
  4. I think I just had a minor heart attack. Congrats to the poster?
  5. Fabulous! I love surprises. Just kidding.
  6. God. That could be 4 of mine. I don't know about UCLA though - balderdash observed correctly that last year's notifications were early compared to preceding years'. I certainly hope so - I want this process over with as quickly as possible!
  7. chin up, grantman! think positive thoughts - if there's one thing i've learned about this process it's that so much of it is totally unpredictable (at least from our side of things). hopefully we'll both get good news soon!
  8. Totally with you. At this point I'm not even so concerned about rejection - I just want some information. Any information, regardless of flavor. First I was expecting to get some news Friday or early next week, and now I'm not even sure the schools I've applied to will notify before mid-February! Hopefully Duke will stick to its 2011 notification date at the very least.
  9. I ran through the results from last year and there were several posted as email notifications that arrived on a weekend - they were later in the process, though. There were also a few Saturday phone calls and lots of post arriving over weekends. But it could also be from people posting results a day late, etc.
  10. Very cool. I worked mostly in Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, the Caucasus, etc. I did have some dealings with governments - one of my academic mentors does a lot of advisory work with governments in the region re: negotiations with multinational extractive industries corporations. I worked pretty extensively with some regulators in Mongolia on a large energy project there, and actually wrote my undergraduate thesis on some of the issues I encountered there. PM me if you're interested in discussing in more detail. Edit: Any other UCLA applicants freaking out? Last year they notified on 1/31 but the year before it seems they didn't notify until later in February. What I wouldn't give for a little certainty.
  11. What's your interest in Central Asia? I worked in the region for a couple of years and have worked on energy issues in the area.
  12. We have a bit of an overlap! I've done some stuff on NE Asian regional integration.
  13. Also, congrats to the person who was accepted to the RAND program. If you're reading this, I'd love to hear more about why you were interested in the program. PM me if you like.
  14. Ha. I sent you a PM re: Oxbridge - if you've got any thoughts on people on your side of that divide who I might want to look into, let me know. Edit: this is frightening - notifications consistently came in on weekends last year, so I won't have the luxury of telling myself I won't possibly hear anything before Monday.
  15. I applied to several of the same programs as well as a bunch more - I'm a comparativist and IPE. I also added Yale, Duke, and several other programs that offer PE as a subfield.
  16. Comparativist! Very kind of you. Also, balderdash (and all other expectant Stanford applicants) - sending good vibes your way.
  17. Ah. I guess I have a half application as well Not sure exactly about the negative feedback. I'm guessing someone's sense of humor has taken a beating during this process, which I must say is pretty easy to understand!
  18. I think I'll join you. Or maybe I'll just move to Goa.
  19. I'm in my mid-20s and I noticed a scattered sample of gray hairs this morning in the mirror. Perhaps I'll automatically acquire the wisdom that purportedly accompanies age as a result of their appearance. Edit: Also, jsclar, what about the distinguished, gray-haired gentlewomen?
  20. Hmm. You may have a point about the signature. Will adjust. Edit: Speaking of signatures, what does 7.5 applications mean? You've piqued my interest.
  21. Whirlibir I'm in the same boat - I think the soonest I would hear would be the 31st (UCLA), and then of course all hell breaks loose as soon as February arrives. I'm really tempted to just deactivate my phone and cancel my wifi for the next month - I'm in the process of changing jobs at the moment and am playing the waiting game with some things in my personal life as well, so overall I'm going a bit crazy. Just a bit, of course... Although I may be ready for the padded room if I get 15 rejection letters in the space of a month. Trying to stay occupied and remember that in the worst possible situation I'll just apply again next year with a different set of schools, but it's quite a challenge. I guess I'm exercising my psychological core? I'm sure some cliche about failure being an opportunity for growth would fit in well at this point in my little rant. Pity I can't remember any of them. The background chatter in my head has turned into a dull roar - all I can hear is "DON'T PANIC" in big red, friendly letters, for anyone who gets the reference
  22. Thanks to Helix, balderdash, and adaptations. Unfortunate that someone would post false results. I guess I get to count down to February 1st at this point, then... I will adjust my hibernation schedule accordingly. Wouldn't it be lovely to go to sleep tonight and wake up in early March, with most of the decisions in? One day of hell and then it would all be over rather than this excruciatingly drawn out process...
  23. I posted this before, but I didn't get any replies so I'll ask again just in case someone who's now active on the forum knows. The results from last year show Columbia notifying several people on January 29, and then a few more on February 18 (then the rest, I suppose mostly waitlists, in late March). Does anyone remember from last year what the deal was with that?
  24. Whirlibird - as a fellow comparativist, I concur
  25. congrats to you all! hopefully the next notifications you receive will be just as positive
