  1. Hello, a semi-related question. Do any Canadians studying in the US return to your home town/city during the summer months? Does that affect your I-20/I-94 arrival departure stuff? This is all brand new to me. Moving from Toronto to NJ.
  2. Also the MA programs accept very few students. Last I recall, around 1-3. You're either offered full funding or no offer at all (I'm speaking specifically about AECD/SESE/CTL not the psych programs).
  3. As an OISE student, I think close knit relationships do exist in their graduate programs, but rather than departments being very well connected as a whole, there's little pockets of communities depending on your area of research. Depending on where those lines are getting drawn it can be comforting/alienating/both. It just depends on your needs.

    New Brunswick, NJ

I know there is an old thread for New Brunswick, NJ, but the last posts were in 2011. I am probably going to accept a PhD offer from Rutgers, but being out of town (from Ontario) it would help to connect with other new/current students. If you are looking for a roommate and interested in living in the neighboring town of Highland Park get in touch. Suggestions on apartment buildings in the area also welcome (it's probably wishful thinking, but I wonder if month-to-month or eight month leases exist?).
  5. SESE has a very interdisciplinary approach. They've also just merged with history and philosophy in education so that's more relevant than ever. Granted the merger is due unfortunately to grad departments at OISE that don't make money (i.e. not the b.ed's, m.ed's) being marginalized and receiving less and less funding.
  6. I am currently an MA student in SESE who applied elsewhere for phd as i've been at U of T for my first two degrees. The competition for all PhD programs at OISE is fierce and even with previous communication, and even experience with faculty in the department, many things are weighed. Not to discourage any applicants but the admit pool is usually quite small. Much is based on who is on the committee from year to year and who or how many faculty strongly advocate for you as they rank applicants. Strong fit with faculty research interests is key but that doesn't necessarily require a background in education. Though some form of experience working in education os required to be eligible.
  7. Hi I saw a similar thread for 2011, so I thought I would open one for 2012. Any others applying to WGS/WS/GS PhD programs? Where are you at in the process? I'm a Canadian applying to US and Canadian schools mainly concentrated around Ontario/NY/NJ. My prior degrees: HBA WGS from Univ of Toronto, MA Sociology & Equity Studies OISE (Univ of Toronto) I'm applying to interdisciplinary proframs with specific faculty who interest me, spanning gender, ethnic studies, and anthro programs. Strong letters Strong statement Personal history doc's still in progress Strong publication and conference history Mediocre GRE scores (solid verbal, low quant) Louise
